Job Description

The Hopp Lab, part of the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s & Neurodegenerative Diseases at UT Health San Antonio, studies the role of microglia in Alzheimer’s disease. We are currently seeking a highly motivated, independent postdoctoral research fellow to join the lab. This position will focus broadly on the cell autonomous and non-cell autonomous role of calcium signaling in microglia using transgenic mice, pharmacological approaches, RNA sequencing, chemogenetics, animal behavior, and in vivo multiphoton imaging. We are also specifically interested in L-type voltage dependent calcium channels on microglia and the anti-inflammatory mechanism of drugs that target these channels.

Job duties:

  • Design and conduct experiments that support the project described above under the direction of the Principal Investigator. Prepares experimental plans and outlines prior to experimental testing. Oversees and participates in study record management, data collection including animal studies. Performs complex and routine experiments following both established and new protocols. Collaborate with other lab members to provide technical assistance with their research projects and assist with general lab operations as needed.

  • Design and implement research protocols, design safety procedures, adapt new procedures, methods or instrumentation relevant to your research projects and provide training and mentorship on these protocols to junior lab personnel including undergraduate students, graduate students, and research assistants and provide written standard operating procedures for all protocols used and developed.

  • Collect, prepare, and analyze research data (using computer software and rigorous statistical methods), keep a detailed notebook summarizing experiments and recording research data, and maintain an organized computer record of your research data.

  • Engage in dissemination of your research findings by preparing posters and oral presentations for local, regional, national, and international conferences as well as peer-reviewed manuscripts.

  • Submit an F32 grant application to the NIH or other appropriate funding agency to support your own research funding.

This position requires a PhD in Neuroscience or a related field. Prior experience with at least one of the following skills is preferred: mouse genetics, animal behavior, in vivo multiphoton imaging, and/or electrophysiology. Other relevant skills include cell culture, qPCR, immunohistochemistry, western blot, and molecular biology. Applicants are expected to independently design experiments that contribute to the overall research focus of the lab. The initial appointment is for one year and is renewable for reappointment. Postdoctoral fellows are expected to apply for independent research funding within the first year, but reappointment is not strictly dependent on independent funding.
