Position Overview:

The core task of the principal engineer is to provide technical leadership and guidance to the calibration engineers for the development and validation of emissions from gasoline engines and exhaust after treatment system for world-wide markets. The responsibilities include establishing processes and organizing all calibration efforts for emissions development by aligning the work of the emission team; providing regulation updates to the team, planning and allocating the required resources, leading technical solution finding activities, tracking and resolving calibration issues, supporting the documentation and certification processes, and ensuring compliance. The principal engineer is responsible for the overall approval for emission-compliant release of the software to the series production vehicles (includes functional area approval from responsible calibration engineering as a precondition).

The product portfolio includes gasoline engine emission calibration for conventional direct-injected, turbo-charged engines as well as 48V and PEHV hybrid powertrains of Mercedes-Benz and AMG vehicles. Included in the development are engines in series production for life-cycle management and future, state-of-the-art powertrains of the brands.

The emission compliance of the engine and vehicle systems is to be ensured for all market specific regulations (globally). The emission calibration is done in close cooperation with Mercedes powertrain development departments in Germany, and with the certification groups in the respective markets. Premium products require an in-depth interdisciplinary approach. At MBRDNA, emissions, OBD, drivability, hybrid operating strategy calibrators and hardware engineers work in close partnership on daily basis.

- Report status and KPIs to management on a regular basis. Identify best possible use of company resources, identify and eliminate waste of resources

- Perform tracking and resolution of emission calibration related topics. Assign, follow-up, and close out issues with owners after successful validation of a solution.  Report the status to management

- Budget controlling: collect and maintain all major cost information for emission calibration topics and activities internally and externally. Plan future resource needs in coordination with technical leaders

- Approve the release of software that is compliant with emissions, as a precondition for final management release

- Represent the emission team on all related topics within interdisciplinary activities, and on a project management level within MBRDNA and Mercedes

- Support the certification documentation and effort, ensuring compliant and on-time sales readiness

- Establish and refine technical targets, ensuring the use of best practice approaches and alignment of general emission development standards through frequent communication and close cooperation with the development teams of Mercedes-Benz Research and Development in Germany.
