Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will lead a team of automation engineers to strategically design, develop, and deliver innovative automation engineering solutions enabling the advancement and intensification of Amgen manufacturing processes. Responsibilities include:

  • Lead a team of technology development process automation engineers to craft automated process equipment and compliant manufacturing software (in collaboration with vendors) for systems that are novel to the industry and/or new to Amgen manufacturing operations. Team activities will primarily support Drug Substance pilot plant facilities within Amgen network.
  • Own the automation solution development activities using the appropriate automation platform, including DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS), Rockwell Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems (SCADA) related hardware, software, network infrastructure, and report by exception using Werum MES or OIS PI Rt-reporting tool.
  • Network internally and externally to define problem statements and identify key technologies and potential solutions in the advanced automation and process control field.
  • Plan, develop and implement automation strategies for the company. These control strategies will be initially implemented and tested within Manufacturing and Clinical Supply (MCS) operations before transferring to the Amgen commercial Drug Substance Network plants.
  • Serve as an expert advisor to senior level management and ensure the automation development strategy aligns with Amgen Process Development strategy.
  • Partner with Process Development scientists, Amgen IS, and commercial manufacturing teams to ensure compliant delivery of developed solutions.
  • Strategic and tactical management and leadership in providing next generation technology development and project support, mentoring, staff development, team efficiency, and efficient use of available resources.
  • Develop support structures with internal/multi-functional teams for capital projects, pilot plant support, and Amgen network-level initiatives' implementation.
  • Providing input into department objectives and establishing strategic direction within the Next Generation Automaton development team.
  • Work with diverse groups (Manufacturing, Quality, PD, Automation, IS, EHSS, Global Engineering and GCPM) and drive new business processes to ensure continuous and sustained improvements.
  • Translate business needs into engineering technology solutions. Lead analysis of alternatives and recommendations for technical/business proposals.
  • Identify areas of potential improvement, conduct analyses, recommend solutions, sponsor improvement projects and implement.
  • Ensure site readiness and compliance for internal audits, external agency audits, and partner audits.
  • Ensure that all staff are adequately trained and follow all GMP standards and procedures
  • Ensure Business Continuity, identify gaps and develop/implement solutions to close the gaps.
  • Develop and adhere to department budgets and spend for operational and capital expenses.
  • Be knowledgeable about compliance and regulatory aspects for operation and maintenance, equipment validation, and support regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Support a safe working environment by following applicable Amgen standards on environmental health/safety practices, rules, and regulations. Ensure the safety of all personnel during plant operations and engineering activities.
  • Prepare the business case in collaboration with multi-functional teams and present it to Amgen management for review and approval.
  • Based on project scope, complete the Manufacturing Information and Technology System (MITS) estimate in partnership with multi-functional domain experts, and obtain final approval.
  • Ensure compliance to Amgen Engineering and Operational standards, specifications, and procedures as applicable during the project design and implementation.
  • Responsible to prepare and present monthly newsletter with updates on Project progress updates to Amgen key partners.
  • Responsible to maintain excellent business relationships with key service providers (OEMs, preferred System Integrators, service providers) so that they continue to provide timely professional support on business requirements.
  • Available for up to 15% domestic/international travel.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree and 2 years of Engineering experience OR Master’s degree and 6 years of Engineering experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of Engineering experience OR Associate’s degree and 10 years of Engineering experience OR High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Biotech Engineering, or related life science engineering.
  • Proficient in implementation of advanced process control applications in Life Science industry (e.g., Model Predictive Control, Adaptive Control).
  • Familiarity with multivariate statistics and linear systems theory.
  • 5-10 years’ system engineering experience on DeltaV Distributed Control System.
  • System Integration using OPC, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, and DeviceNet technologies.

  • Proficient in project management skills.
