The Office 365 Substrate is the name we use to describe the collection of APIs and capabilities that enable internal Microsoft developers to build massively scalable applications which leverage CPU, storage, artificial intelligence and data mining, and much more. We are looking for an amazing candidate to become the Engineering Manager of the team responsible for the REST APIs (and other types, of APIs, too!) that provide access to Substrate content. We need someone who is capable of running a service that handles hundreds of billions of requests per day and who is also capable of leading the design, development, and deployment of the next generation of substrate APIs. 

 

It’s hard to imagine an Engineering Manager role which offers more opportunity for organizational and product impact than this role does. You’ll manage a team of exceptional engineers and you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with the exceptional extended substrate team which is composed of some of the most outstanding distributed systems engineers in the world. You’ll have direct influence over how we evolve our APIs to support the next generation of services including Enterprise Search, which is an exceptional business and product opportunity for the team.

 

We are looking for a Principal Engineering Manager to lead this initiative. The ideal candidate will have a blend of technical chops needed to manage, nurture, and lead a high caliber engineering team. Candidates should be adept at applying a wide array of techniques to focus problem solving and building an end to end system. Candidates should have proven background in collaborating with multiple partners and create mutually impactful successes. Candidates should be highly customer obsessed and have a strong drive for high quality. Candidates should also have a proven track record of recruiting great talent and of investing in the growth and development of team members.

 

Responsibilities

This team focuses on the REST protocols including the endpoints which support Microsoft Graph. The team also owns the “Simple Document Storage” APIs upon which many new internal applications are being built. Simple Document Storage is evolving from being completely schema-less to becoming schematized in order to enable new scenarios such as enterprise search. Driving the evolution of the document storage APIs will be a key deliverable.

 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and build a team of passionate engineers developing and coaching them to higher performance and engagement
  • Lead the design, implementation and delivery of REST and other APIs
  • Maniacally manage cost and availability – set the benchmark for the industry
  • Coach your team and for building and running at scale tools and experiences that get used by hundreds of millions of users every day
  • Work independently and collaboratively with other product teams across Microsoft (across global development centers)
  • Identify talent, mentor and develop people

 

Qualifications

Qualifications: 

  • 10+ years of experience in technical roles, solid ship experience across product life cycle
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing a team
  • Ability to nurture and grow talent
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Fluent in C# (C and C++ is also preferred)
  • BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent
