Responsibilities
The primary goal of the Problem Management Principal Program Manager role in PRSE is to improve reliability and resilience of Microsoft Azure services by assessing root causes through leading cross-group stakeholders in delivering complex software, process and resource improvement initiatives. We seek to increase our system’s ability to adapt to and overcome incidents and outages, maximize our learnings from such events when they do happen, and help teams build adequate and appropriate defenses against common failure patterns.
In this role, you will help various Microsoft services get more from their post-incident workflows, bringing to light all the important work people do day to day to “keep the lights” on. You’ll help discover the best ways we can empower teams to do their best work. You’ll also look for common patterns or weaknesses across systems, processes and people (again, that’s the software AND the human aspects) and surface your findings/recommendations to leaders.
• Investigate Microsoft service outages (aka “incidents”) and post incident reviews
• Learn from post incident review write-ups and related processes via interviews, data gathering, etc.
• Envisioning through spearheading initiatives related to improving the Quality of Azure
• Spearhead improvements to people, process, technology, culture etc. that will result in improved value from post incident reviews
• Work with Azure Service Teams to transition their post-incident workflows to align with modern methods
Qualifications
We recognize that this approach is inherently cross-disciplinary. Valuable insights may come from diverse previous lines of work, educational backgrounds, and operational experiences. With that said, we generally seek someone who can meet the following:
Qualifications:
- 8 years of experience with production software systems (particulary distributed systems, and Azure/Cloud a nice bonus)
- 8 years of program, project, and product management
Preferred Qualifications:
• A strong team player who proactively contributes to building positive, can do, team cultures
• 5+ years’ experience in influencer roles leading complex cross-org initiatives impacting people, processes and technology
• 10+ years demonstrated strong communication and collaboration skills, facilitating through c-level meetings
• 5+ years release engineering or deployment pipeline experience
Preferred Experience
Bonus Qualifications:
• Deep technical background preferred, and experience/understanding of Azure a big plus
• Demonstrated public speaking or negotiation skills a plus
• Education or 6 months+ experience with Resilience Engineering, Safety-II, or Safety Science, a plus
• Education or 6 months+ experience in qualitative, human-subject research a plus
