The Principal Research Scientist R&D will be responsible for leading & driving a wide array of topical skincare formulations (cosmetic and OTC) projects such as lotions, cleansers, sunscreens and other innovative premium product forms for the SkinMedica & Diamond Glow brands of Allergan Aesthetics., an AbbVie Company. The candidate will be responsible for independently driving new formulation development, including ingredient selection, chassis selection, design of experiments to trouble-shoot formulation challenges, run stability studies & robustness studies to test the boundary conditions of formulation. The candidate will partner with Skin Biology team on ingredient screening & selection of lead ingredients & formulations. The candidate will work closely with Clinical team to develop clinical supplies strategy & execution, work with regulatory affairs to ensure formulation compliance in lead launch regions. The candidate with be responsible to work closely with packaging partners to develop strategy & coordinate execution of packaging compatibility studies, partner with Tech Transfer (R&D) & manufacturing scientists (Operations) to ensure smooth scale up of bench formulations through process development studies. The candidate will also be driving specification development, routine analysis, stability testing and new ingredient research. The candidate is expected to be able to create new skincare formulation batches, perform ongoing stability test, proactively monitor, investigate, and trouble shoot issues. Emphasis is on the ability to design systematic studies perform/complete experiments, keep accurate records and facilitate interpretation and analysis of testing results. In addition, the candidate will maintain relationships with key raw material suppliers. Relevant literature review of structure property relationship of ingredients, formulation techniques as well as awareness of current ingredient and product trends. The candidate is expected to work independently, design studies, document & track progress of technical projects. Work in fast paced environment, while maintaining attention to details to meet current SOP. Responsibilities include: Perform experimental bench formulations. .Managing communication of scientific data & project risks & timelines. Formula Stability testing, monitoring and report. Record keeping including notebooks as well as electronic records, SOPs writing. Material ordering for the lab, filling lab reports, dealing with equipment maintenance. Qualifications Ph.D. with 5+ years of formulation experience PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other relevant Engineering BS (Bachelor of Science) with 10+ experience on bench formulations of topical skincare formulations Proven track record of developing & execution of topical skincare formulations from lab bench to launch Proven experience & expertise in structure property relationship of formulation ingredients Proven expertise of all topical formulation forms including emulsions, gels & surfactant-based systems.
