The Cardiometabolic Disorders (CMD) therapeutic area in Amgen Research is looking for a Principal Scientist (PS) who is trained as a physician-scientist in Cardiology or Endocrinology.
The PS will use fundamental biological insights to discover and develop drugs for cardiometabolic diseases. The scope of work ranges from the earliest stages of scientific ideation to generation and characterization of drug candidates, with the final goal of delivering high quality molecules and programs for Amgen’s pipeline that are ready for human studies. The primary focus will be on leveraging human data, cell/molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and preclinical models (both in vitro and in vivo) to build strong conviction around a therapeutic hypothesis, coupled with generation and testing of therapeutic molecules. The PS will also provide strong scientific support for programs that have entered clinical testing or have been approved. As a physician-scientist, the PS will be expected to be a creative and rigorous investigator, as well as a broad, integrated thinker who will bridge communication between early discovery and all other functions at Amgen.
Position Responsibilities
Work with a broad knowledge of human physiology/disease, clinical medicine, and basic biology to discover and develop drugs for cardiometabolic disease that will advance Amgen’s pipeline
Work in the laboratory independently as well as motivate, lead, and supervise the activities of others
Design, execute, interpret, and troubleshoot experiments
Present Research programs at cross-functional meetings
Communicate with colleagues in all other functions at Amgen, serving as an ambassador for Amgen Research
Enhance the external eminence of Amgen Research through high profile peer-reviewed publications, external presentations and relationships with academic institutions
Evaluate external opportunities for partnering or licensing new cardiometabolic assets
Basic Qualifications
Doctorate degree and 3 years of Scientific experience
OR
Master’s degree and 6 years of scientific experience
OR
Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of scientific experience
Preferred Qualifications
MD, MBBS or DO degree from an accredited medical school with formal training in laboratory-based basic biology, as evidenced by first or senior authored publications
Subspecialty board eligibility/certification in Cardiology or Endocrinology
Strong basic science background in academia or industry
If coming from academia, the candidate should be in a faculty position at an academic institution as a laboratory-based physician scientist
A record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications
Strong presentation and communication abilities (both written and oral)
Ability to anticipate problems and find creative solutions
Experience functioning as a discovery scientist and medical expert in a complex matrixed environment
A strong grasp of human biology and human genetics
Strong teamwork capabilities and leadership potential
