Who we are

Microsoft Development Center Estonia, with Offices in Tallinn and Tartu, is part of the Experiences & Devices division within Microsoft and well known for its Skype history. Today, our focus is much broader: We are building the Intelligent Conversations & Communications Cloud (IC3) which powers communication services for millions of Microsoft customers around the world across products such as Skype, Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, Xbox, Windows, Azure and more. Our IC3 platform is one of the largest Azure deployments worldwide and growing rapidly. We own many large-scale applications in Estonia: from real-time communications, engineering systems to commerce, payments, anti-fraud and SMS. Together with partner teams across Microsoft we build and run an intelligent fabric of communication services to empower every person and organization to achieve more.

 

We develop highly scalable and reliable backend services running on Azure, supporting millions of Microsoft customers every day. Our SMS team in Estonia is on the cutting edge, owning all aspects of engineering and operations of our cloud infrastructure for delivering SMS from a diverse set of Microsoft products to mobile phones around the world. The rapidly growing message volume and the number of teams and scenarios utilizing our platform present a unique set of challenges that span across engineering, product and partners.

Responsibilities

  • Take charge of the service architecture, ensuring scalability, automation and intelligent operations.
  • Be relentless on reliability, leveraging telemetry and tooling at our disposal. Manage and improve Software Engineering and operations practices.
  • Be the thought leader and work with product management and business development functions around the globe to define strategic product goals and ensure engineering execution.
  • Hire and retain top engineering talent. Lead, coach and develop a team of highly skilled Software Engineers.
  • Role model our Microsoft values.

Qualifications

  • Solid experience in leading engineering teams.
  • Strong technical background/experience in programming languages such as C#, Java or Python. 
  • Familiar with cloud technologies, microservices, REST API and backend development - Azure experience is a plus.
  • Knowledgeable about software engineering and/or operations principles and practices: from build, test and software release management to agile technologies.
  • Experience working with telemetry and data to improve visibility and quality
  • Excellent communication skills, specifically in English (other languages are a plus). 
  • Ability to work with geographically distributed teams in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Passion for software development and people management/development.
