Description 

As Principal Engineer, guide technical team members in the application of systems engineering to the development and integration of medical devices and systems into networked hospital environments. Resolve difficult problems, from conception to final design with team input.  Plans and leads project assignments in the evaluation, selection and adaptation of various engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria with minimal guidance.

  

Contributes to a Systems Engineering vision that aligns with the organization's vision and strategic plan.  Utilizes solid understanding of wireless network communications concepts in a medical device domain. Provides direction to technical team members that are accountable for implementing integration and connectivity deliverables. Exhibits creativity and innovation in completing divisional and cross-functional/business unit goals and objectives.

  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Support installation and configuration of Baxter products into the wireless network environment in customer hospital environments.
  • Support troubleshooting and resolving network connectivity issues with fielded Baxter products at customer sites.
  • Analyze network communications performance in laboratory environments and in customer hospital environments.
  • Create system requirements, architectures and interface specifications defining the wireless network connectivity of medical devices with other devices and application servers.
  • Collaborate with design partners, either internal or external to Baxter, to determine needed functionality, allocation of functionality to different systems and the specifications of the interfaces between the networked systems.
  • Understand industry best practices of network management and security including 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax (WIFI 6) standards.
  • Analyzing hospital networks and trends to increase the potential of integrating with Baxter medical devices.
  • Collaborate with functional teams, such as software, to realize network communications deliverables such as interfaces, designs and software.
  • Collaborate with laboratory team to ensure appropriate equipment and functionality in wireless network laboratory environment.
  • Create and execute verification activities (test protocols, test cases, test reports) on network communications on functionality and performance.
  • Primary technical contact between Baxter and selected external design partners for network communications.
  • Resolve competing constraints between interrelated functions (Engineering, Risk Management, Compliance, Marketing, Service)
  • Ensure compliance to the product development process and Quality System and Design Control requirements.

Qualifications for this role

  • Deep expertise with wireless network management and security including 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax (WIFI 6)
  • Experience troubleshooting network connectivity and security issues.
  • Experience with medical devices, electronic medical record systems and/or other medical systems resident in the hospital environment.
  • Understanding of the planning, design, installation, configuration and maintenance of wireless network equipment
  • Experience in cybersecurity on wireless networks
  • Experience in monitoring and measuring network traffic and performance including ability to read OTA packet captures.
  • Experience using Wireshark, AirMagnet, Netspot, Ekahau, Omnipeek, Ixia or equivalent tools.
  • Strong Linux/Unix background
  • General RF characteristics knowledge / spectrum analysis.
  • Experience in developing systems engineering deliverables such as requirements, architecture and verification plans / tests / reports.
  • Requires strong organization and communication skills, with the ability to interface with both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to convince management on courses of action with minimal assistance using both written and verbal methods. 
  • Must be able to provide solutions that reflect understanding business objectives and cost implications. 

Education and Experience

B.S. / M.S. and 5 - 8 years related experience.
