In this role The Drug Substance Technologies (DST) organization is accountable for advancing Amgen’s biologics and small molecule portfolio through performing candidate screening, process optimization and characterization. The department relies heavily on automation to increase efficiency and reliability of the tasks.

The Pre-Pivotal department within DST is seeking a candidate passionate about automation to join our team in Thousand Oaks, CA. This person will work multi-functionally with lab-based scientists and to implement improvements, expansions, and maintenance of automation systems.

Position Responsibilities

• Deploy/Install new automation capabilities in high throughput experimentation (liquid handlers such as TECAN/Hamilton, Ambr15/Ambr250 cell culture systems) to increase efficiency of lab-based tasks and reliability of the system;
• Maintain and improve DeltaV systems across to support lab and/or pilot scale process development activities under regulated environments;
• Collaborate with the multi-functional teams to develop and deploy data workflows for high throughput experimentation;
• Communicate with multi-functional teams in DST organization to ensure consistent reliability of automation systems across Amgen;
• Support functional area projects focused on improving/troubleshooting process equipment;
• Lead incident investigations to identity root causes and develop permanent solutions for automation issues;
• Resolve automation related hardware issues in the field including network, controller, and bench-top equipment;

Basic Qualifications

Master’s degree,

Or Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of automation experience,

Or Associate's degree and 6 years of automation experience,

Or High School Diploma/GED and 8 years of automation experience

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s in life sciences, chemical/biochemical engineering, or a related subject area with 4+ years of automation experience

Required Skills

• Hands on experience with high throughput automation systems such as TECAN/Hamilton and ambr15/Ambr250, and/or demonstrated experience with DeltaV systems including use of engineering tools such as DeltaV Explorer, Control Studio, User Manager, and DeltaV Operate Configure;
• Excellent communication skills, and great interpersonal skills to stimulate collaboration with people from different backgrounds, functions, and companies;

Preferred Skills

• Basic knowledge in script writing for high throughput automation systems such as TECAN/Hamilton and Ambr15/250 systems.
• Basic knowledge of standard communication protocols such as OPC, Profibus, Modbus, and Serial;
• Prior experience in solving complex problems and ability to work independently with strong self-motivation and can-do attitude.
• Basic knowledge of ThermoFisher TruBio software;
• Basic knowledge of OSI PI Client tools;
• Basic knowledge on networking and virtual server architecture;
