Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will join our Pivotal & Commercial Synthetics (PCS) group at either our Cambridge, MA or Thousand Oaks, CA location. Amgen’s PCS department within the Process development (PD) organization supports commercial process development and process characterization to advance our small molecule and hybrid clinical candidates through the pivotal stage of development to commercial launch. The PD Scientist will support the advancement of our synthetic portfolio as a process chemist and use their synthetic training to develop commercially viable synthetic routes and processes and ensure process performance through process understanding, modelling and characterization. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and team-oriented individual with a strong background in organic chemistry and a proven track record of scientific innovation and achievement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Discover and evaluate synthetic routes to identify a commercially viable synthesis of drug substance
  • Discover and develop new reaction methodology to enable access to active pharmaceutical ingredients
  • Develop robust processes to enable safe and reliable commercial manufacturing
  • Support cGMP manufacturing and technology transfer to enable drug substance clinical supplies
  • Ensure process performance through process understanding, modeling and characterization
  • Deliver regulatory documents and contribute to the Chemistry Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) section of regulatory filings
  • Champion innovative applications of synthetic chemistry, pharmaceutical manufacturing, process analytical technologies (PAT), automation and data analysis
  • Communicate (verbal and in written) scientific concepts and results
  • Work collaboratively with scientists and engineers on multidisciplinary teams
  • Work independently in advancing projects and studies within required deadlines.
  • Keep current with field of expertise, participate and advance drug development, technologies, and information services within Amgen

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in Chemistry completed by June 2023 Or
  • Master’s degree in Chemistry and 4 years of industry or scientific experience Or
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and 6 years of industry or scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. research in methodology/catalysis, total synthesis, physical organic chemistry, or flow chemistry
  • 2 or more years’ post-doctoral experience in an academic laboratory or pharmaceutical/biotech industry
  • A track record of peer-reviewed publications and research presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic environment and influence cross-functional teams to achieve business goals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to multitask, effectively plan and follow through on complex projects
