Job Description

Microsoft is “all in” on open source software. This job is a unique opportunity to be an important part of Microsoft’s open source evolution. Open source is now core to Microsoft’s culture and business, and Microsoft is stepping up to become an industry leader in open source projects and participation, including open source compliance and governance best practices. In this role as a Program Analyst on the Open Source & Standards Team, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring that Microsoft continues to succeed in the open environment.

Responsibilities

The main responsibilities for this multidisciplinary role include:

 

  • Providing frontline support to ensure compliance with open source licenses, including legal reviews, license identification and counseling, and working with the larger open source legal community on compliance infrastructure
  • Working closely with Microsoft’s internal Open Source Programs Office to develop and operate tooling to enable Microsoft to engage in open source at scale
  • Advising and coaching engineering clients, business group attorneys, and paralegals on open source licensing, compliance, strategy, and the company’s open source policies and best practices

Qualifications

Open source experience is highly desired together with:

  • An interest or working knowledge of open source software licensing and intellectual property rights like copyrights and patents
  • Interest in legal operations, improving legal workflows, and driving continuous improvement
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • Experience in a legal or technical role supporting software engineering teams
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across diverse groups and communities in legal, engineering, community relations, and communications disciplines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A bias for action and driving for practical and scalable solutions
  • Flexibility in adjusting to workload fluctuations and business imperatives
