Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering manager, the responsibilities of the Mechanical Engineer will be to develop Power Electronic enclosures meeting the customer specifications and conforming to ABB technical best practices and norms. He will conform to the operational processes, guidelines and procedures and ABB Conduct code.

Your responsibilities

  • This position focuses on the design aspects, hardware and software of excitation systems for synchronous machines. It requires good overall understanding of the entire application in which the excitation system is installed including the direct or indirect interaction with devices or subsystems such as transformers, switchgears, protection relays, control equipment etc. Knowledge of the operation of synchronous machines, control theory, and power electronics is required.
  • Review, in detail, the relevant as-sold contract documentation to ensure a thorough understanding of the project technical requirements. Meet and communicate with the designated project manager and customer representatives to gather data and understand the customer's requirements.
  • Develop the required engineering deliverables, such as, equipment purchase specifications, I/O list, concept of control, electrical schematics, bill of materials, application software, test procedures, operating and maintenance manual, etc.
  • Provide technical support to sales, manufacturing, testing, quality control and commissioning groups.
  • Ensure the completion and maintenance of all required documentation, paperwork, records, in accordance with established company procedures and work processes.
  • Participate with cross functional teams to ensure the continuous on going improvement of methods, processes, productivity and quality, while reducing costs. Maintain technical competency and remain current in changes in the industry.
  • Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and regulations. Practice strict compliance with all safety rules whenever working on energized electrical equipment and help enforce such safety standards with others who may be involved in work on such energized equipment.
  • Able to assist sales team in the generation of cost models, engineering labor estimates and technical proposal reviews. Review proposals for technical accuracy.
  • Ability to interpret and apply national codes and standards, such as NEC, NEMA, ANSI, IEEE, IEC, CSA.
  • The position requires successful completion of assigned projects on time and within budgetary constraints, in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Use judgment and initiative necessary to identify priorities, solve problems, meet schedules, adapt to change and choose the most efficient ways to do the work without compromising quality
  • Participate occasionally in client visits and commissioning.

Your background

  • University degree in mechanical (or electro-mechanical);
  • Member of OIQ;
  • 5-7 years work experience;
  • Capacity of High analytical and calculation skills or usage of provided tools,
  • Experience in design for manufacturing (sheet metal, welding, assembly, processes)
  • Familiar with electrical components (protection, control and power)
  • Experience in power and power distribution industry is a strong asset;
  • Experience with use of norms and technical documents;
  • Experience with 3D software, primarily with Solid Edge v19 and Autocad, Inventor 8.0;
  • Fluent in English, French – written and spoken. Spanish is an asset;
  • Occasional travel;
  • Practical use of SolidEdge 2D/3D
  • Practical use of Autocad 2D
  • Practical use of thermal software
