YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Protein Structural Biologist Senior Scientist, are to: 

 

  • Develop a deep understanding of target biology and become an expert on the target and the mechanisms;
  • Member of the Plant Biotechnology Protein Production and Structural Biology Team in Research and Development;
  • Structural biologist with hands-on, current expertise in modern techniques used to determine structures of challenging macromolecules and macromolecular complexes from Gene to Structural Insights using X-ray crystallography via both molecular replacement and experimental phasing;
  •  Work with robotic and manual screening of crystals, follow-up, and condition optimization is a must as is expertise with synchrotron data collection, processing and refinement;
  • Will determine protein structures starting from gene sequences and leveraging deep knowledge of protein biochemistry, rational mutagenesis and other sample modification techniques to accomplish the ultimate goal of structural determination;
  • Collaborate effectively with a wide range of scientific partners in insect control, disease, yield, herbicide resistance disciplines;
  • Demonstrate sustained efforts on parallel crystallization and structure determination projects for multiple novel proteins, protein complexes, and other macromolecular entities;
  • Support diverse crystallization and imaging robotics;
  • Maintain development and testing of new approaches to successful structure determination of macromolecules;
  • Actively participate in structure driven protein discovery and protein engineering projects;
  • Take ownership of gene to structural insights to hypothesis testing of select structural projects;
  • Project team leadership to achieve tight deliverables and timelines;
  • Analyze and present data, participate in technical meetings to discuss progress and issues;
  • Be flexible enough to adapt to the changing needs of a dynamic research environment;
  • Handle record keeping, publication, and other Intellectual Property (IP) associated activities.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, etc.);
  • 5+ years Post Graduate experience with demonstrated and sustained practical expertise in crystallization of macromolecules with several years practicing crystallization in a multi-project environment;
  • Demonstrated gene to structure skill set;
  • Demonstrated experience with macromolecule structural determinations by cryo-electron microscopy;
  • Demonstrated experience working on multidisciplinary collaborative teams;
  • Highly effective written and oral communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Diverse basic science background: molecular structure, protein crystallization/crystallography, biochemistry, pharmacology, molecular biology, biophysics, etc.;
  • Demonstrated team and/or project leadership and experience carrying a project to completion;
  • Successfully solved at least 15 protein structures (utilizing both molecular replacement and experimental phasing);
  • Experience with membrane proteins;
  • Experience with scripting languages Perl or Python;
  • Demonstrated interest in developing and/or improving protein crystallization techniques;
  • Demonstrated team leadership experience and be willing to act as a project lead or team member as needed to deliver business objectives;
  • Demonstrated ability to determine protein structures starting from gene sequences and leveraging deep knowledge of protein biochemistry, rational mutagenesis and other sample modification techniques to accomplish the ultimate goal of structural determination.

 

Domestic Relocation may be avialable for this role.
