Regional Digital Safety Advocacy Lead
Corporate, External and Legal Affairs

Singapore

Microsoft’s Corporate, External and Legal Affairs team (CELA) has an immediate opening for a highly skilled professional to be responsible for Microsoft’s Regional Digital Safety Advocacy program.   This unique role, combining industry and government affairs responsibilities, is based in Singapore, and will be covering Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand, Southeast Asia and India. The Regional Digital Safety Advocacy lead will work in close partnership with (among others) the CELA geography leads across Asia, the CELA government affairs professionals, as well as the CELA corporate Digital Safety Team.

Fostering digital safety for customers, services, and the overall online ecosystem is one of the most pressing issues for the tech sector today.  Microsoft’s Digital Safety Team is a new group within the Corporate, External and Legal Affairs division that seeks to "earn customer trust every day" by, among other things, addressing the growing challenge of illegal and harmful content online.  The team partners with Microsoft’s Government Affairs regional teams on both proactive and reactive engagements impacting a broad array of digital safety topics.

Responsibilities

  • Becoming conversant on key digital safety topics and Microsoft’s related policy objectives, and being able to relay them effectively both internally and externally
  • Offering input to the Corporate Digital Safety Team at regular intervals (and as needed) as to “hot” safety issues in-region
  • Serving as the sole, regional point of contact for safety-related proposals and requests from governments, influencers, and others for new charters or laws, written responses to queries or other explanatory material, external engagements, etc., and coordinating the region’s and/or subsidiary’s top-line response
  • Ensuring a depth of understanding of, and appropriate internal and external distribution of, corporate-produced materials on key digital safety issues
  • Engaging in public speaking and effectively representing Microsoft at external safety-related events, and coordinating with appropriate local Microsoft representatives as necessary
  • Serving as the regional, internal expert and lead for Microsoft’s annual Digital Civility research and campaign releases (see, for example, www.microsoft.com/digitalcivility)
  • Actively participating in regular calls, trainings and internal events relating to digital safety issues and developments

Qualifications

  • 7+ years’ experience in government or external affairs or related field
  • Interest in and knowledge of the overall, global digital safety landscape including global technology platforms, as well as specific, topical issues (i.e., terrorism and violent extremism, hate speech, child sexual exploitation and abuse, “sexploitation,” etc.)
  • Awareness of related domains, including privacy and free expression, a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated crisis-management skills, including ability to coordinate and communicate across internal and external stakeholders, industry counterparts and corporate leadership
  • Proven ability to manage multiple facts, figures, timelines and deliverables
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required; public policy, legal or political background preferred
