Job Description

The Dui Hua Foundation, with offices in San Francisco and Hong Kong, is a visionary non-profit organization that promotes universally-recognized human rights worldwide. Specifically, our work seeks clemency and better treatment for at-risk detainees through well-informed, mutually respectful dialogue with China. Focusing on political and religious prisoners, juvenile justice, women in prison, and issues in criminal justice, we are guided by the premise that positive change is realized through constructive relationships and exchange.

Dui Hua Hong Kong office is seeking a full-time research assistant to support our research. Working directly with Dui Hua’s research staff, the research assistant will also be involved in Foundation’s advocacy and publications.  

This position is well suited for recent graduates or applicants with prior work experience interested in human rights in China and/or US-China relations.

Responsibilities:

  • Political Prisoner Database (PPDB)
    • Perform data entry to gain familiarity with Dui Hua’s PPDB
    • Identify and locate sources, including court judgments, media and other materials related to at-risk detainees, with a focus on political prisoners
    • Retrieve data from PPDB to conduct statistical and quantitative analyses
    • Assist with PPDB maintenance and improvement
  • Online Research
    • Identify issues related to political prisoners and China’s criminal justice system from news media sources and online judgments
    • Systematic identification, copying and archiving of online materials
  • Advocacy
    • Produce documents to support Dui Hua’s advocacy for clemency and better treatment for at-risk detainees through respect dialogue with China
    • Produce statistical reports about document submissions and Chinese official responses to at-risk detainees
  • Produce periodic data and research summaries and reports upon request
  • Provide administrative support upon request

Skills & Requirements

  • Must be proficient in both English and Chinese
  • Excellent Chinese & English writing skills a bonus
  • Data management skills, hands-on experience in data retrieval and familiarity with databases such as generating SQL scripts and queries preferred
  • Knowledge of Sino-US relations, contemporary Chinese politics, society, and law
  • Commitment to human rights and social justice work
