Microsoft’s Aether Committee (for AI, ethics, and effects in engineering and research) and its working groups serve in an advisory role to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) of Microsoft on rising questions, challenges, and opportunities with the development and fielding of AI and related technologies. The committee is responsible for formulating and making recommendations on policies, processes, and best practices. The Aether committee consists of members nominated by the leads of Microsoft’s major divisions, and other contributors from across Microsoft, including research scientists from Microsoft Research. The Aether Committee has commissioned a set of working groups that focus on specific sets of challenges and exploring opportunities to address them with innovations in technology and policy. Working groups have been stood up in multiple areas, including bias and fairness, intelligibility and explanation, safety and reliability, engineering best practices, human-AI interaction, and sensitive uses of AI technologies.

 

The Aether Committee and its working groups seek outstanding intern applications for spring, summer, or fall of 2020. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, challenges and opportunities with regards to the responsible development and fielding of AI technologies. Areas of focus include technical, legal, and ethical considerations with safety, trustworthiness and robustness, intelligibility and explanation, bias and fairness, human-AI interaction and collaboration, development tools, platforms, and engineering best practices, and considerations of harms and sensitive uses, including challenges with harms, including consideration of privacy and human rights.

Responsibilities

Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

As an intern at Microsoft, you will have the opportunity to develop your research career as a member of a vibrant environment for cutting-edge, multidisciplinary R&D, spanning both theoretical and applied work, and efforts across a spectrum of technical and policy-centric efforts.

Qualifications

In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in an MS or PhD program in CS, EE or a related STEM field or similar level programs in ethics, law, or policy-related fields.
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in conducting research, writing peer-reviewed publications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to develop original research agendas.
  • Must be able to collaborate effectively with researchers, product leaders, and product development teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, cross-group, and cross-culture collaboration.
  • Ability to think unconventionally / out-of-the-box to derive creative and innovative solutions.
