In this role, you have the opportunity to carry out research in areas like emerging security technologies, security architecture, security analytics and state of the art de-identification.

Your responsibilities

An overview of your tasks include:

  • Be responsible for de-identification of common and emerging types of data, e.g. imaging DICOM, structured clinical data, clinical notes, genomics, GPS location

  • Validation and benchmarking of de-identification tooling

  • Invent and validate in industrial project teams new digital security and privacy-preserving technologies for use in Philips products and services

  • Participate in research projects that address digital security challenges, create intellectual property and transfer the results to Philips businesses

  • Scout for new digital security and privacy-preserving technologies and monitor the literature and Internet sources

  • Keep our digital security competence at world-class level

  • Contribute to our research roadmap by new ideas and winning new proposals

  • Carry out industrial research in the security and privacy field, enlarging relevant knowledge and bringing-in new knowledge

  • Provide consultancy for research and business de-identification needs and perform research to discover new solutions for open challenges in the domain of de-identification

  • Pro-actively make knowledge available for operational use within Philips Research and Philips, such as to contribute to successful transfers of research results to customers

  • Keep abreast of technical, application and market developments in the relevant technological and industrial areas, showing interest in the business aspects

  • Contribute to the definition of the departments' research program

  • Contribute pro-actively to a creative and inspiring working environment

More specifically:

  • You perform independent research and participate in projects in the area of digital security and privacy protection. The results of your work are translated into intellectual property and / or adopted by Philips Research or Philips businesses into successful products and services.

  • You quantify re-identification risks for existing public or private datasets and further de-identify them in order to minimize the re-identification risks.

  • You have full understanding of the state-of-the-art in digital security and privacy protection. You apply your knowledge to provide consultancy to Philips businesses.

  • You contribute to the external exposure (e.g. by means of patenting and scientific publications) and external collaborations (e.g. with universities or in the context of European research projects).

This role is part of the Data Science department and our mission is to lead Philips into the Digital era through world-class innovations on data analytics and digital security. The focus of the department is on advancing the automated analytical methods used to extract new knowledge from data, as well as to strengthen brand image by ensuring privacy as well as trustworthiness and protection of digital propositions. The department builds on several interconnected competencies including data management, machine learning, statistics, probability models, pattern recognition, data engineering, security, de-identification and privacy. We use the advances in the aforementioned scientific disciplines, as well as new digital platforms to create innovation for Philips businesses by real-time extraction of insights from various sources like sensors, mobile devices, Web, and social networking sites. We are looking for:

Our ideal candidate has:

  • A MSc in computer science, mathematics or another relevant area

  • Knowledgeable in the domain of statistics and precise with numbers

  • A strong inclination to and background in digital security or privacy protection, preferably proven by relevant scientific results

  • Software skills fit for data processing and analysis, e.g. Python

  • Knowledge and experience in applying state of the art privacy models is a plus, e.g. k-anonymity, l-diversity, t-closeness, differential privacy, statistical re-identification risk determination in accordance with HIPAA and GDPR

  • Practical experience in industry is a plus

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships at all levels, be able to obtain customer and user needs and transform those into practical solutions

  • Team worker in multidisciplinary and international settings

  • Critical thinker, curious, proactive, creative, fast learner

  • Able to work under time constraints and have tolerance of uncertainty

  • Act with integrity and in line with compliance/regulations

  • Fluent in English
