A research technician position is available immediately in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School to study the biology of aging. The position will be funded by a 5-year R01 research grant entitled “Molecular mechanisms by which mild elevation of mitochondrial superoxide extends longevity” under the direction of Jeremy Van Raamsdonk. The Van Raamsdonk Lab seeks to understand the aging process and to use that information to promote healthy aging and decrease the severity of age-onset neurodegenerative disease. The laboratory primarily uses C. elegans as a genetic model organism, prior to validating results in mouse models.

Required Qualifications:

·        B.Sc. degree in related discipline with participation in laboratory courses

·        Experience working in a research laboratory

·        Ability to work well with others in a team research environment and to work independently

·        Good oral and written communication skills

Additional expertise that would be beneficial:

·        Experience working with C. elegans would be an asset

·        M.Sc. degree would be an asset

·        Experience with molecular biology, especially cloning, would be an asset

Responsibilities:

The chosen candidate will have multiple roles within the Laboratory. In addition to supporting the research of others, interested candidates will have the opportunity to conduct their own research projects and be authors on scientific publications.

·        Making solutions, plates and lab reagents

·        Organizational tasks such as ordering, organizing and communications

·        Molecular biology - e.g. PCR, quantitative PCR, Western blotting, cloning

·        Experiments with C. elegans - lifespan, stress assays, physiologic rates

·        Maintaining stocks of C. elegans - freezing, thawing, transferring

·        Work under the supervision of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and or principal investigator
