Scientific Director, Research, Biologic Discovery - Experimental Immunology

What you will do
 

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role, you will be responsible for a group of dedicated scientists engaged in exploratory immunology research that enables the discovery of new biologic medicines and improved prediction of the behavior of these medicines in patients.

As a Scientific Director, you will build and lead a diverse Experimental Immunology group with an ambitious agenda aimed at:

• Taking antibody discovery to a new level by harnessing the power of immune system engineering, including ex vivo approaches

• Designing new strategies for antigen delivery and presentation in transgenic animals to overcome immune tolerance and target difficult epitopes of high therapeutic value

• Developing novel screening platforms, including organoid-based systems, for the assessment of therapeutic potential and risk of antibody drug candidates

Responsibilities:

• Develop/refine a research strategy which builds on Amgen’s strengths and unique capabilities in Biologic Discovery, emphasizes breakthrough innovation and establishes near-term and long-term objectives

• Recruit, develop and retain world class scientists and build strong research teams which are highly productive and efficient

• Foster a strong culture of innovation and creativity. Ensure the research organization is an environment which allows Amgen to recruit, develop, and retain world-class scientific talent

• Ensure effective collaboration among enabling functions, therapeutic teams and locations. Implement effective project management and knowledge sharing capabilities

• Establish and implement external collaborations with academic laboratories as well as CROs.

• Participate in business development efforts including acquisition and licensing of innovative technologies and intellectual property which enhance therapeutic discovery research

• Ensure that the partnership with Translational Medicine, Clinical Development, Manufacturing and Commercial Operations is superb.

• Effectively represent Amgen by communicating the company’s unique capabilities and technologies, and the value of its discovery research pipeline to patients, physicians, analysts, industry partners, academia, and other external constituents

Basic Qualifications:

• Doctorate degree and 4 years of Biological Sciences experience OR

• Master’s degree and 7 years of Biological Sciences experience
  OR

• Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of Biological Sciences experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD and/or MD with specialization in a relevant biological sciences field

• 6+ years of experience directly managing people and/or experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

• Strong immunology research credentials and a strong record as evidenced by publications, patents, and pipeline contributions.

• Track record of innovation in discovery of therapeutic molecules and strategies to improve efficacy and safety profiles.

• Detailed understanding of the humoral immune system

• A high affinity for developing methodologies, and the ability and desire to collaborate with a highly diverse, cross functional team

• A scientist with a passion for the discovery of novel medicines and an exemplary track record of success emanating from their current leadership experience in academia or the biopharmaceutical industry. The successful candidate’s experience as research investigator and scientific excellence will insure instant credibility with Amgen’s broad internal and external partners.
