In this vital role as computational biologist join our team and further our mission of making biological discoveries that accelerate target and drug discovery and validation at Amgen. The scientist will be part of the computational biology group in the GAU, which operates collaboratively across Discovery Research spanning the therapeutic areas of Oncology, Inflammation, and Cardio-metabolic Disorders. The position focuses on the application of bioinformatics expertise to the analysis and interpretation of multi-omic data from both internal projects and high-value public resources. Additionally, the role will involve the creation of novel algorithms and analytical approaches that can be used to both identify and validate new drug targets.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply sophisticated techniques in bioinformatics, statistical analysis, and programming to biological problems across a wide range of human diseases and drug modalities at Amgen.
  • Interact directly with project teams and key partners within Amgen, engaging in iterative collaborative research.
  • Integrate work tightly with wet lab efforts within the GAU, including functional genomics and single cell multi-omics technology development.
  • Represent group internally and externally through presentations, publications, networks, collaborations and conferences to promote approaches and raise the profile of work within the team.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree

OR

Master’s degree and 4 years of scientific experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or Data Science.
  • Experience with manipulation, interpretation, and innovative analysis (e.g. novel algorithm development) of multi-omic biological datasets, including their application to research related to human disease and drug discovery
  • Proficient in programming (e.g., Python, R, Java, C/C++), cloud computing, and working in a Unix/Linux environment; ability to develop customized bioinformatics tools.
  • A strong background in biology; experience, with emphasis on human disease (oncology, inflammation, and/or cardiometabolic disorders).
  • Passion for interacting with bench scientists to develop new technologies and refine our approaches.
  • This position involves remote work, with the potential for periodic on-site visits to Amgen research locations in South San Francisco and/or Thousand Oaks.
