Job Description

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Scientist II, are to: 

 

  • Conduct research and contribute to research projects, technologies, publications, intellectual property or trade secrets;
  • Lead scientific and technical projects;
  • Design, conduct and interpret complex experiments to identify genes and/or gene stacks to achieve product level efficacy;
  • Develop and implement research and/or technology-driven proposals;
  • Be the primary author for scientific reports;
  • Effectively communicate research findings;
  • Assume project leadership and/or supervisory functions;
  • Contribute to the nomination strategy by identifying gene candidates and their combinations with the highest potential to bring commercially relevant disease resistance;
  • Assume project leadership and/or supervisory functions as required;
  • Be accountable for cross-functional work in multiple platforms/process areas across plant biotechnology and external partnerships;
  • Solve complex problems requiring original thinking and deductive reasoning and the application of scientific principles to the design and interpretation of scientific experiments;
  • Use specialized knowledge, the broad application of scientific principles and current literature to advance projects, experiments and/or process improvements;
  • Adhere to established protocols and techniques;
  • Operate and troubleshoot instrumentation;
  • Solve problems autonomously using multiple data sources;
  • Prioritize and coordinate work within a large team and provide training to contingent workforce;
  • Maintain detailed record keeping and required documentation;
  • Achieve commitment to safety and adherence to safety protocols and best practices;
  • Design and analyze the results of a variety of molecular biology and biochemistry experiments independently;
  • Develop and implement molecular assays to compliment/validate results from phenotypic controlled environment assays;
  • Effectively communicate and interpret the results of experiments, production KPIs, cost/benefit analysis and laboratory related issues to partners and key stakeholders;
  • Demonstrate a sustained high level of technical skill and achievement;
  • Keep abreast of new science and technological develops and exploit them to continuously improve functional area capabilities;
  • Foster team-based approach to research;
  • Exploit new developments from the scientific literature to aid in problem solving.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Plant Biology, Plant Science or closely related discipline with at least three years of relevant experience or Master of Science with at least five years of relevant experience or Bachelor of Science with at least seven years of relevant experience;
  • Strong plant pathology and molecular biology acumen with practical knowledge of plant-pathogen interactions;
  • Knowledge of pathogenicity factors and/or mechanisms of host resistance;
  • Experience with multiple plant pathogen systems, especially with plant pathogenic fungi;
  • Experience working in effector-triggered immunity;
  • Ability to independently design experiments, implement testing strategies and analyze and interpret results;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment leading to constructive interactions;
  • Ability to interact with and influence individuals from, various technical backgrounds to facilitate a desired outcome;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
