Title: Scientist II, Process Development
Work Location: Princeton, NJ
Division: Pharma Services Group (PSG)
When you’re part of the team at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you’ll do important work, like helping customers in finding cures for cancer, protecting the environment or making sure our food is safe. Your work will have real-world impact, and you’ll be supported in achieving your career goals.
How will you make an impact?
Acts as a key scientist in the upstream process development group within the BioProcess Sciences division of the Pharma Services Group. This position will be responsible for the execution of and hands on support of projects such as the development and characterization of mammalian cell lines for the clinical/ commercial manufacture of recombinant protein products.
Participates in the execution of projects developing mammalian cell culture processes to support the production and manufacturing of recombinant proteins (including mAbs) with activities including:
- Clone and media/feed screening using AMBR technology.
- Bioreactor culture development including fed-batch (2 to 250L scale) with both glass and single use cell culture technologies
Supports internal development and may research new methods and technologies to enhance operations. Makes detailed observations and reviews, documents, and communicates test results internally and may interact with customers. Maintains lab equipment.
What will you do?
- Technical/scientific project activities to execute strategies and technical solutions that meet client needs and expectations.
- Assists with the design of experimental plans based on the defined deliverables.
- Conducts semi-routine and moderately complex tasks and sample analyses to support process development. Works with process development and manufacturing groups to trouble-shoot process challenges.
- Performs key activities associated with production cell line development including transfection, selection, single cell cloning, high throughput screening, characterization of clonal cell lines using scale-down models, cell banking, and cell line stability studies.
- Develops mammalian cell culture processes to support the production and manufacturing of recombinant proteins (including mAbs) under varying levels of direction, including, but not limited to cell culture scaleup, media development, harvest (recovery) process development. Performs media optimization, bioreactor process development, and cell culture clarification.
- Maintains and ensures safe laboratory environment and work practices.
- Helps to maintain laboratory and order common supplies.
- Executes, records, and evaluates experimental data appropriately, assists with the writing and revising of protocols, process development reports and technology transfer protocols as needed.
How will you get here?
- Bachelor's degree or Master’s degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.
- With Bachelor’s degree, minimum of 2 years of experience related to pharmaceutical manufacturing, process development or academic laboratory. Relevant industry experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in routine cell and molecular biology techniques.
- Upstream bioprocessing experience utilizing mammalian cell cultures; experienced in designing and optimizing cell culture processes with manufacturing in mind.
- Experience using design of experiments (DoE) software (i.e. MiniTab, JMP) preferred.
- Working knowledge of GMP/ GLP regulations relating to cell lines for biopharmaceuticals.
- Strong MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word skills. Microsoft Project skills preferred.
- Experience with high throughput automation is a plus.
