Hunt Valley, MD facility. Rapidly growing team of diverse technically strong R&D scientists. Highly interactive and engaging team that works on an array of projects and scientific challenges.
How will you make an impact?
We are seeking a highly creative scientist with technical expertise and laboratory experience in basic virology, cell culture, and/or other biotechnology applications to complement an interdisciplinary team of development scientists
What will you do?
The selected candidate will support ongoing studies, design and execute approved study plans, and directly support various projects and analysis of scientific data. Projects will be designed to examine the physical properties of infectivity and evaluate media and supplements for virus productivity.
How will you get here?
- Assist with designs experimental plans, leads study execution, analyzes experimental data, generates laboratory products, writes technical reports, quantitative analyses, and product summaries
- Consistently performs work on complex scientific projects requiring independent action and high degree of initiative , while developing scientific experimental plans to produce a consistent high quality product
- Exercises practical judgment within broadly defined practices and policies and exhibits creativity and foresight in selecting approaches and techniques for obtaining solutions
- Provides technical leadership and/or support to multiple projects simultaneously to effectively and efficiently conduct studies in BSL-2 biocontainment laboratories.
- Provides direct support in maintenance of adherent and suspension cell cultures media/feed/supplement/preparation, operation of bench scale bioreactors
- Leads and/or participates in testing and evaluation of new technologies and protocols to improve ability to serve customers/develop new products
- Determines methods and procedures and develop high quality protocols, task specific procedures and SOPs
- Ensures that equipment, reagents and supplies are maintained and used properly.
- Maintains appropriate records and performs other assigned duties
- Maintains accurate lab notebook to support protection of intellectual property in accordance with relevant Thermo Fisher required standards
- Maintains high level of professional expertise and substantial knowledge of principles and theories through familiarity with competing technologies and /or products, review of current scientific literature, and attendance at scientific seminars and meetings
- Presents data at scientific conferences ( external and internal) and prepares other publications when appropriate
- Interacts closely with other internal departments in the commercialization of new products and customer and business support
- Engages in technical interactions with customers through teleconferences , site visits, and /or scientific meetings and with outside collaborates through seminars and publications
- Performs duties independently with only general direction given
- Complies with all company safety, training, and quality regulations and procedures
- Able to work safety with chemicals and hazardous materials
- May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Virology , Microbiology, Biology, or related discipline with 5 plus years of experience
- Master’s degree Virology , Microbiology, Biology, or related discipline with 3 plus years of experience
- PhD degree in Virology, Microbiology, Biology or related discipline
- Demonstrated expertise in mammalian cell culture and virus handling/infectivity techniques and ability to perform and report technical work in containment laboratory (BSL-2)
- Strong working knowledge of biosafety and aseptic cell culture techniques

- Strong organizational skills with proven track record of working effectively both independently as a team player
- Demonstrated proficiency performing techniques required for virus infectivity culture and assays
- Excellent knowledge of virus growth, harvest, and storage
- Demonstrated ability to safely handle multiple viruses
- Demonstrated ability to participate in maintenance/daily operation of a virology/microbiology lab
- Strong understanding of immunoassays and nucleic acid assays
- Demonstrated ability to identify and solve problems
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to interpret and summarize scientific results in a clear and concise manner
- Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate and adapt to changing project priorities
- Prior industrial experience, particularly in process development and/or cell culture media formulation
- Knowledge or experience with biocontainment facilities and procedures, laboratory safety, and decontamination
- Advanced computer skills, including ability to perform DOE studies and statistical analyses
- Familiarity with operation of bench-top stirred tank bioreactors and high throughput cell culture technologies (e.g. ambr15)
