Job Description
The Scrum Master helps a self-organizing, self-managing product development scrum team meet its goals by owning the process and removing impediments. The Scrum Master ensures a scrum team lives by the values and practices of Scrum. The Scrum Master coaches and mentors the team, helping its members do the best work they possibly can. The Scrum Master serves as a process owner for the team, creating a balance with the project's key stakeholder the product owner. The Scrum Master does anything possible to help the team perform at their highest level. This involves removing any impediments to progress, facilitating meetings, and doing things like working with the product owner to make sure the product backlog is in good shape and ready for the next sprint. The Scrum Master is also often viewed as a protector of the team. The most common example is that the Scrum Master protects the team by making sure they do not over-commit themselves to what they can achieve during a sprint due to pressure from an overly aggressive product owner. However, a good Scrum Master also protects the team from complacency. Essential Job Functions: 1. Must be able to garner respect from his/her team and be willing to get the job done via servant leadership. 2. Must be able to communicate well with teams and key stakeholders. 3. Must be able to lead and demonstrate value-add principles to a team 4. Ensure Agile and Scrum concepts and principles are adhered to; must be able to be a voice of reason and authority and make the tough calls. 5. Notice differences and issues as they arise and elevate them to management, as needed 7. Demonstrate continual improvement by intentionally growing ones craft learning new tools and techniques to manage oneself and a team 8. Facilitate discussion and facilitate alternatives or different approaches to resolve conflicts on the team 9. Lead a team to self-organization and self-management 10. Bring disclosure and transparency to the business about development progress, status, and issues in order to grow business trust Responsibilities: Exhibit lean-agile leadership traits Support the rules i.e. own the process Facilitate team progress towards its goals Lead the team's efforts in relentless improvement Facilitate meetings Support the product owner Eliminate impediments Promote quality practices Build a high-performing team Protect and communicate, i.e., manage the team's interface with the outside world Coordinate with other teams Facilitate preparation and readiness for multi-team ceremonies Support estimating activities Education: BS/BA Experience: • Must be a Certified Scrum Master (can train) • 5+ years of information technology experience • Thorough understanding of agile software development methodologies, values, and procedures • Experience working with an agile methodology on large scale, technically complex projects • Ability to deal with multiple projects and deadlines • Thorough understanding of the software development lifecycle • Must be self-motivated as well as creative and efficient in proposing solutions to complex, time-critical problems • Data driven analysis skills for measuring and managing delivery • Experience with relevant business software e.g. Microsoft Office applications, Team Foundation Server • Experience using Microsoft Team Foundation Server Agile or Scrum templates • Excellent team player with the ability to influence and negotiate • Ability to understand and communicate technical issues Skills: 1. Understand basic fundamentals of iterative development 2. Understand other processes and methodologies and can speak intelligently about them and leverage other techniques to provide value to a team/enterprise 3. Understand basic fundamentals of software development processes and procedures 4. Understand the value of commitments to delivery made by a development team 5. Understand incremental delivery and the value of metrics 6. Understand backlog tracking, burn-down metrics, velocity, and task definition 7.
