Microsoft, the world leader in computer software, has an immediate Senior Counsel opportunity for an experienced attorney to join its IP Litigation Team.

 

This position will increase the capacity of the litigation group to meet the challenges of its growing worldwide technology litigation docket, with an emphasis on patent litigation. Occasional travel will be necessary both within the United States and internationally, as dictated by our docket.

 

Position is located in Redmond, WA at Microsoft Headquarters.

Responsibilities

  • Managing assigned cases, including:
    • formation of litigation teams,
    • formulation of litigation strategy,
    • oversight of all litigation activities,
    • marshalling of internal facts,
    • review and editing of all written advocacy,
    • preparation of outside counsel for oral argument and trial, and
    • in all other ways exercising primary responsibility for representation of Microsoft before courts, administrative law judges and government agencies
  • Frequent and regular communication with outside counsel, and other law department attorneys, paralegals and staff
  • Counseling Microsoft’s various business units on risk mitigation and engaging in thought leadership on legal issues relevant to intellectual property law
  • Frequent contact with business and technical personnel at Microsoft, including senior executives
  • Providing thought leadership to Microsoft executives on future directions of intellectual property law, and occasional external engagement through written articles and speaking engagements on such issues
  • Working efficiently to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment with a demanding case workload, while prioritizing workflow to adjust for fluctuations
  • Managing costs consistent with fee arrangements and budgets
  • Consistently demonstrating the highest standards of ethics and professionalism

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10 years of demonstrated work experience in IP litigation, including first chair responsibility in some cases and some trial experience
  • Significant responsibility in at least five patent cases preferred
  • Experience with international patent litigation, trial systems and/or patent system a plus
  • Experience in a corporate legal department or in a federal government agency a plus
  • A demonstrated ability to direct creatively and effectively the defense of a sophisticated client in complex litigation
  • Knowledge and understanding of trial presentation techniques
  • JD from an ABA accredited law school, and outstanding academic credentials
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and diverse cultural experience
  • An aptitude for and interest in understanding computer technology
