ABOUT THE ROLE?

We are looking for an exceptional Cloud Engineer to be part of a close-knit team delivering foundational data services to AstraZeneca’s data science and data engineering communities.

The R&D Data Foundation platform exists to give our scientists and data scientists access to data and tools at pace, accelerating their work on life saving medicines. We are making our data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable (FAIR) and the work of the R&D Data Foundation is making a significant contribution to that effort. In the last two years we have accelerated compliant access to data and tooling by as much as two orders of magnitude. The platform consists of teams focused on delivering a number of key products: R&D Data Lake; R&D Data Catalogue; Reference Data Management; Master Data Management; Patient Level Database; Data Find & Integrate; Track, Trace & Audit.

You will lead efforts to move away from IT focused cloud services, to democratised cloud services. Your work will have two strands: firstly you’ll be getting hands-on building and enhancing what we already have to get rid of manual tasks that can be automated; secondly you’ll be helping to build a stronger cloud capability in the RDF team so we can be more self-sufficient. Our most pressing task is automating the creation of Data Lake infrastructure and safely integrating it with AI services and our business process engine.

You would be working closely with data engineers and solution architects to produce great technical designs and make them into a reality. You will likely possess a blend of excellent engineering skills and successful experience building quality cloud applications. We would like you to be a proactive problem solver who can design and build easy to maintain applications that enable other teams to do their jobs at pace.

You will be trail blazing in this space and there is potential to grow the capability to the point where we build a small team of globally distributed cloud engineers within the R&D Data Foundation.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED?

Essential

• In depth experience with design, build and run of AWS services.
• Experience and skills around automation and associated tools (we use: Jenkins, Chef, CloudFormation, Lambda, Terraform, Ansible).
• Ability to learn and develop new tech skills as required supporting the extension of the R&D Data Foundation.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team or independently to deliver objectives.
• Proven experience with scripting languages (e.g. Python, NodeJS).

Desirable Skills and Experience

• Experience of AWS CDK.
• Experience of building data focused cloud services including Data Lakes, data streaming, and access automation.
