Job Description
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Operations Sustaining Engineering, the Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing manufacturing process technologies for BD reagent products. The goal of these projects will be to successfully implement Quality improvements, Capacity expansions and/or Cost Reductions. Works closely with R&D, Quality and manufacturing locations to implement these new technologies.
Knowledge & Problem Solving
- Primary activity shall be to specify, obtain quotations, monitor the build, install and optimize custom built automation equipment for the purpose of manufacturing medical devices.
- Supports projects by taking a lead role in the overall equipment design, fabrication, implementation and optimization of varied and complex portions of new production lines.
- Proven ability to work in a team environment which identifies root causes then develops and pursues plans toward their resolution.
- Demonstrates complete understanding of a wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in a manufacturing process technology. Has general knowledge of other process technologies. Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, and practical.
- Developing and communicating specifications for electrical controls, automation hardware, software components and systems.
- Develop operating procedures, acceptance test and validation test plans and protocols.
- Design, develop, upgrade, and debug sequence control logic, PLC programs, electrical control sub-systems.
- Thorough knowledge and experience in programming PLCs, sequence logic design, PID loop design /implementation required.
- Experience with programming Allen Bradley PLCs and Factory Talk supervisory control and data acquisition software (SCADA) preferred.
- Experience designing using NFPA79 and Category 3 safety guidance documents a plus.
- Programming skills in SQL, Windows DLL, .Net preferred.
- Experience with programming and developing vision system applications required (COGNEX preferred).
Discretion / Latitude
- Works under general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions.
Liaison
- This position will serve a technical liaison between the business unit and manufacturing locations in North America, Asia and the Caribbean.
- Works with cross functional team to investigate & implement solutions to major manufacturing issues.
Project Management
- Must be able to develop and execute validations protocols, engineering studies and design of experiments.
- Manages projects to design, prototype, build and commercialize manufacturing process equipment. Initiate, plan, execute, monitor, control, and close these projects.
- Manages capital spending and project schedules.
Process Technology
- Develops specifications and acceptance protocols to purchase production equipment.
- Manages vendors in the design, development and implementation of manufacturing equipment.
- Applies six-sigma and lean manufacturing methodologies to optimize manufacturing equipment.
- Develops processes by designing and/or performing experimental testing, data analysis, preparation of reports, and providing recommendations.
- Provides input into project technical strategy.
Cross Functional Collaboration
- Works with Quality, R&D, Clinical and Regulatory team members to ensure successful implementation of projects.
- Provide technical support to investigations such as: Corrective and Preventive Actions, Customer Complaints and Quality Notifications.
Travel
- Domestic and International travel to BD and vendor facilities is required.
- Trips will range from 1 day to multiple weeks.
- Total time on travel is estimated at 25%-40%
Qualifications
- BS Degree in Electrical Engineering required. Minimum of 5 years relevant experience or a combination of equivalent education and experience in development of high-speed automated manufacturing equipment, with preferred background in the high volume production of medical devices, in-vitro diagnostic products, and pharmaceutical products.
- Experience developing and implementing process improvements and launching new equipment into a manufacturing environment. Ability to lead all phases of projects; brainstorming, scoping, budgeting, writing specifications, quoting, capital proposals, vendor management, coordinating installations, running validations.
