We are a team committed to building graph machine learning pipelines and analysing disease knowledge graphs. Our team is made up of diverse skillsets: data scientists, machine learning researchers and software engineers with an interest in graph learning and natural language processing.

We are working in collaboration with our scientists to help develop better drugs faster, choose the right treatment for a patient and run safer clinical trials.

We work on data derived from biomedical literature, public data sources, and proprietary clinical and pre-clinical multi-layered data including drug screens, genomic wide analysis, single-cell transcriptomics, proteomics, CRISPR screens, real-world clinical data and Electronic Health Records (EHR, RWE). Our goal is to transform our ability to surface key biological insights improving our understanding of oncology, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, targets and drug response.

We are looking for an experienced data engineering tech lead who can help us improve our pipelines and build a more robust backend to support our use cases, while improving our engineering practices.

ABOUT THE ROLE?

As part of our team, you will scale, optimize and automate data processing and integration pipelines to expand our knowledge graph with data coming from highly heterogeneous distributed data sources.

You will lead a small team of talented engineers providing direction and guidance and where your responsibility will be to remove blockers and managing their backlog of work. You will architect efficient and reusable API, backend services and feature stores that drive data analytics as well as complex web applications. You will lead the data engineering community across our team and other teams working on imaging, deep learning, molecular data and omics.

You will collaborate with Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers and Product Managers across AstraZeneca to build compelling user-facing products. You will maintain awareness of state-of-the-art tech stack for data engineering, and influence strategic decision of the group. You will identify and lead external interactions with opinion leaders in the field, and grow our external reputation by publishing innovative methodologies and scientific discoveries.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED?

• Independent, collaborative, & product focused
• Technical excellence, empathy and clear communication
• Strong software development skills, Python and Scala preferred
• Experience in leading small teams of developers - giving directions, steering them away from pitfalls, removing blockers and managing a backlog of meaningful work
• Solid experience with SQL and noSQL backends. Ideally moving gigabytes/terabytes of parquet files between PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch and other data warehousing solutions
• Experience coding as part of a team (including participating in PR reviews, establishing unit testing, linting and performance frameworks within CI/CD)
• Experience in building, improving and automating large scale data science pipelines
• Experience with UNIX filesystems, server architectures, and distributed systems
• Experience of cloud environment (Azure preferred)
