Job Description

We are looking for Substrate Hardware Repair team members who embrace these roles and who want to work together to help work on the automated hardware repair service in M365 Core Platform, also known as Substrate.   

 

Substrate is the data and intelligence platform that enables internal partner teams at Microsoft to build, deploy, and maintain compliant productivity apps and services with reduced effort and faster time to market. The purpose of the Substrate Hardware Repair team is to provide a high degree of hardware availability for our service at the lowest possible cost, though smart automation and data analysis. With companies like Google, Facebook, Apple, and Amazon all working hard to deliver capabilities in the cloud space, the need to deliver strategic projects is critical to our success.  The substrate hardware repair team helps to return hardware back to the service faster: this has the potential to make large impacts to our credibility and brand in the industry. We are looking for a data scientist who can help us to make sense of the massive amounts of data that we deal with, and to help us to create machine learning models using supervised machine learning to assist with predictive machine repair.

Responsibilities

The engineers in this team play a critical role in driving the technical details of a variety of middle tier and backend service projects spanning multiple areas. They will have to understand the design, code and features of different areas, come up to speed and implement features that delight customers and partners via their intuitiveness, attention to detail and responsiveness. They have good partnership skills and are motivated to collaborate with others. They are excited about making sense of massive data sets and finding connections between them. They understand machine learning models, have built ML systems and can apply this knowledge and experience to our problem space. 

 

Qualifications

A well-qualified candidate for this position would meet the following requirements for this position: 

  • A degree in Mathematics, statistics, electrical engineer or other relevant technical discipline.   
  • Continuously building stronger coding, design, and problem-solving skills 
  • Experience scripting with PowerShell, bash or Python 
  • Experience with source code control systems and automated build systems (using Git, Github, Azure DevOps, VSTS/TFS, or other DevOps systems) 
  • Experience building predictive modelling and simulation models in complex business environments 
  • Experience building mathematical modeling systems to help drive process and product improvements 

 

Additionally, a candidate with relevant experience in one, or more, of the items below would be a great fit for our team: 

  • Server and/or service experience is desirable.  
  • Cloud services experience (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc.) is desirable 
  • Understanding of data analysis and machine learning is beneficial, but not required.  
  • Ability to quickly ramp up on new technologies. 

 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
