Job Description Summary

The Senior Electrical Engineer will design and develop firmware and electrical circuits for embedded systems and mixed board design for wearable and handheld medical devices with BLE connectivity.

The candidate will participate in technical design reviews and will interface closely with electrical and software test teams, and work with other functional areas such as system, mechanical, quality, regulatory, etc., to ensure successful implementation of intended designs.

This role is in BD Diabetes Care (BDDC) which is one of the fastest growing and most patient-connected Business Units with the company. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and supporting the technical effort of the device software and electrical design, development, and integration to ensure its final market release. The candidate is expected to work closely with cross-functional teams and contract development groups.

Responsibilities:

Hands-on electrical engineer for electrical circuit and firmware design of sophisticated medical devices. This engineer will create and maintain a design that satisfies product requirements and resolves design challenges. This engineer shall:

1) Have hands on design experience and excel at designing:

  • Ability to design low noise analog and high speed digital circuitry, and RF design
  • Proficient in Instrumentation circuit design & Digital signal processing of low noise sensing circuitries
  • Ability to integrate new technologies into design related to low power IC’s, digital, analog, Microcontroller Families, SOCs, RF components, Displays, sensors and batteries
  • Expertise in Schematic, PCBA design, Component Library management, Gerber & Manufacturing/Assembly File Generation
  • Proficiency in PCBA Design Tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro
  • Knowledge of Design for PCB Manufacturability/ Assembly and Testability
  • Experience with system level design including circuit design, board bring-up, integration and ability to debug, troubleshoot and resolve issues with best engineering practices
  • Prior knowledge of electro mechanical system, package PCBAs in mechanical devices.

2) Be able to perform engineering analysis to predict the behavior of the proposed designs. Analysis tools may include closed form solutions, or electronic simulation programs leveraging various computational tools:

  • Proficiency in simulation packages in tools such as Multisim, LT Spice
  • LabVIEW
  • Experience with multi-tasking and multi-processor communication using microprocessors with and without RTOS implementations
  • Experience in use of advanced development/debugging tools; e.g. C compilers, ICE, JTAG, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc.

3) Have hands on experience with signal integrity tools

  • Proficiency in using Lab Tools such as Digital Oscilloscope, Spectrum Analyzer, Data Loggers

4) Have an ability to write, develop and debug Firmware using IDE tools such as IAR embedded System, etc.

  • Experience with developing “bring-up” code for new circuit boards, and executing “board bring-up”
  • Experience in use of advanced development/debugging tools; e.g. C/C++ compilers, ICE, JTAG, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Experience with sensors and firmware engineering is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with embedded RTOS preferred.
  • Experience developing electronics and/or firmware in a medical device or other regulated environment is preferred.

5) Have excellent problem solving skills, and an ability to bench test and troubleshoot prototype and production level boards. Be able to create fixtures, data acquisition systems and perform necessary analysis to test product design.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of design and development experience in electrical and firmware.
  • C programming, and debugging.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, adaptable, proactive and willing to take ownership. 
  • Experience with RF & communication, Motors, MCUs, ADC, DAC
  • Experience with Microcontroller-based design (Software and electronics), electromagnetic simulations, MATLAB/ Simulink
  • RF system prototyping, testing and characterization
  • Be able to perform engineering analysis to predict the behavior of the proposed designs

Desired:

  • Master's Degree or Ph. D in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Experience with low power systems and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
  • Experience with TFS and/or IBM Rational Tools suite, DOORS, and RTC a plus.
  • Prior knowledge of MEMS/Chip Fabrication highly preferred
