Job Description Summary

In this role, the AI Engineer will develop, maintain and productionise AI & data science solutions & capabilities across AstraZeneca Enabling Units business areas. This is a technical role that requires working closely with the data science team and business partners. You will be responsible for packaging solutions and codebases, building machine learning pipelines, maintaining existing AI/ML solutions and using up-to-date data science and cloud technologies to scale and systematize solutions and products built by the Enabling data science team. The successful candidate will have a proven high delivery standard and to be able to deliver autonomously with minimal direction as well as working as part of large & ongoing delivery teams. They will be able to work closely with others, be comfortable leading aspects of projects and able to manage risk and expectations in novel situations. They will have strong communication skills and be comfortable working as part of agile sprint and delivery groups.

Accountabilities

• Establish strong working relationships with the Data Science team and their customers to develop an in-depth understanding of business priorities and early insight into changing needs.

• Develop and deploy AI solutions into production using cloud technologies and data science platforms such as AWS Sagemaker and Dataiku.

• Understand, develop and optimise highly scalable tools leveraging machine learning, encoders and rule-based models.

• Adapt machine learning models to best exploit modern parallel environments.

• Translate unstructured, complex business problems into appropriate solutions.

• Develop a robust understanding of relevant AZ data sources and their provenance, quality and structure.

• Work with engineering and architecture to support large scale data preparation, platform delivery and the industrialization of proven analytics methods.

• Provide technical expertise in at least one AI specialism.

• Provide working knowledge & support to one or more specific AI specialism frameworks.

• Be creative, collaborative and product-focused.

• Promote and present AI engineering work both within and outside the organization.

• Collaborate closely with data scientists to understand their challenges and apply AI capabilities.

• Be an active member of the EUIT AI Science & Engineering team.

• Build, refactor and maintain packages in both Python and R programming languages.

• Experience building APIs using frameworks like Python/FLASK, loosely-coupled web applications on recognized frameworks and experience using Docker containerization.

• Develop and apply ongoing knowledge and awareness in trends, best practice and new developments in analytics and data science.

Education, Skills, and Experience

Essential

• Bachelors Degree or the equivalent number of years of experience in Computer Science or a related quantitative discipline

• Demonstrated technical skills in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, recommendation systems, pattern recognition, natural language processing or computer vision.

• Strong software development skills, including python and R

• Experience using a data science platform

• Demonstrated experience with data analytical approaches, and tools for the understanding of data in support of scientific questions

• Strong written and verbal communication, business analysis, and consultancy skills

• Experience working on financial time-series problems as part of an agile software delivery team.

Desirable

• Masters or PhD in computer science or related quantitative discipline.

• Comfortable working in high-performance computing or cloud environment

• Proven record of building and deploying robust AI/ML products

• Proven track record of publishing relevant predictive modelling results and tools in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and other scientific proceedings.

• Prior experience working in therapeutic drug research or development. Demonstrated contributions in target discovery, indication discovery, and patient-disease stratification initiatives are highly desirable.

• Experience in life sciences and healthcare
