The Sr Manager, Tooling Engineering is part of the Laboratory Products Division (LPD) which unites deep scientific expertise, a collaborative culture and rich resources to deliver the lab equipment and consumables that our customers need to achieve their scientific goals – quickly, reliably and safely. How will you make an impact?
Under the direction of the Senior Director of Research and Development, the Senior Manager, Tool Engineering leads the engineering team responsible for the specification, design and development of injection and blow molding tooling used to manufacture plastic consumable products for Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Laboratory Plastics Essentials business unit. This challenging role combines technical, team and organizational leadership to develop a high performing engineering organization capable of delivering robust products and manufacturing processes meeting an ever-growing set of customer and internal needs. The engineering team supports all project types: new product development, capacity expansion, equipment replacements, and providing engineering assistance to operations as necessary. This position will reside in Rochester, NY.
What will you do?
Provide functional and technical leadership of the Tool Engineering team.
Functional responsibilities include:
Hire, retain, and develop top talent
Partner with Program Managers on project execution in order to deliver full scope on time
Employee goal and development plans
Compliance with all appropriate processes, systems and procedures
Define metrics and pursue continuous improvement programs
Accountable for functional project deliverables
Create and manage department budget
Technical responsibilities of the function include:
Develop global network of tool supplier partners with capabilities to support the considerable diversity of tooling used to make our products
Active participation in cross functional project teams in order to collect product and operational user needs and translate into tooling requirements.
Provide Design for Manufacturing criteria for incorporation into product designs
Develop Requirements documents used within RFQ process to select best suppliers for projects
Work with suppliers on tool concepts. Conduct design reviews to ensure best in class engineering practices lead to robust tool designs and corresponding long term optimum molding process performance
Material selections to meet application needs
Create a new technology roadmap to supports innovation and continuous improvement of products and processes
Execute robust Risk Management practices to maintain high probability of project success, ie, satisfaction of scope, schedule and budget.
Reviews, analyzes, directs, and implements improvements to products and processes to assure improved product quality and better product performance while reducing manufacturing & and operational costs through continuous improvement process.
Partner with Program Managers in the creation and execution of project plans and corresponding budgets including resource allocation and required capital.
Responsible for assessing resource needs across multiple projects and working with appropriate leaders/managers to assign resources per established priorities.
Create a synergistic, collaborative team environment encouraging trust, respect and cooperation among team members.
Complete special assignments as needed.
How will you get here?
Education/ Experience
Bachelors or advanced degree in Mechanical or Plastics Engineering, with a minimum of 10 years related experience in plastic product design, development, and/or manufacturing
Minimum of five years of functional management of a technical engineering team
Expertise in plastics processes: injection molding, blow molding (extrusion, injection, injection stretch)
Demonstrated leadership developing and executing action plans to transition from a current state to the needed future state
Experience developing regulated medical device products is preferred
Proven track record of delivering to objectives
Excellent technical leadership skills including strong root cause problem solving abilities
Individual must be able to deliver operational and new product development strategies
Excellent communication skills including an ability to influence at all levels of the organization
Demonstrated ability to drive results within a matrix organization
Considerable experience in a Product & Process Development Phase/Gate Methodology
Ability to travel 10-15% including international locations
