Job Description Summary

The BD Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) Materials Science and Engineering Center of Excellence (MatCoE) has an exciting opportunity for a highly talented and passionate individual to lead a multi-location Materials Laboratory organization. The leader will be responsible for continued development of his/her team, maintaining and building associate/instrumentation capabilities, establishing, improving, and validating material test methods, and managing/prioritizing incoming material test requests.


The candidate should possess a deep understanding of polymer material structure-property-functional relationships. Additionally, the candidate is expected to be able to plan, lead, motivate, and work effectively with cross functional teams. This includes taking on clear accountability for the organization’s success, delivering to the expected timelines, and providing actionable results.


This Senior Manager position will report directly to the R&D Director of the Materials Science and Engineering CoE.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Lead multi-site, state of the art Materials Science Characterization Laboratories
  • Identify and establish working relationships with external technology partners
  • Hire, develop, and manage team members at distributed locations to maintain and grow functional capabilities/capacity to meet business needs while providing frequent feedback
  • Effectively communicate, orally and written, project progress both within the team and to senior leadership
  • Oversee laboratory maintenance and control including personal protective equipment, space, and upkeep/cleanliness
  • Drive improvements and efficiencies in laboratory processes and execution
  • Participate in technology sensing and assessment activities for MatCoE strategic innovation
  • Budget development and management
  • Lead problem solving and issue resolution especially as it relates to root cause analysis
  • Develop and validate new test methods for evaluating existing and new materials
  • Ensure compliance to Laboratory standards, policies, and guidelines

Minimum Qualification:

Education: B.S. degree in polymer science, chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, or related degrees.  An advanced degree is preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in a chemical/polymer laboratory environment
  • Minimum of 3 years of managerial experience
  • General project management skills
  • Willingness to travel globally up to 20%
  • Experience in the medical device industry preferred

  • Demonstrated agility and action when facing change and uncertainty while instilling confidence
  • Business acumen to align innovation actions and laboratory expansions to business needs/objectives
  • Candidate should have working knowledge of a range of materials characterization techniques including, but not limited to: DSC, TGA, DMA, Rheology, GPC, FTIR, SEM, DMA, Mechanical testing, etc.
