Senior Mechanical Engineer (R&D) – Heart Failure Burlington MA or Pleasanton, CA

As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will be part of our Heart Failure product development team focused on designing and developing innovative mechanical and electro-mechanical medical devices or subsystems/components in support of the company’s strategic plan. In this role, you will apply your analytical and practical engineering principles in analyzing mechanical systems, overseeing the designing and running of tests, improving or fixing product features, and documenting findings. This role will involve a range of responsibilities including but not limited to design concept development, requirement development, testing and data analysis, and test method development and validation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide technical leadership on engineering projects and own critical design tasks
Make critical technical judgements and decisions
Demonstrate enthusiasm, positive outlook, and inquisitiveness participating on cross-functional teams to resolve technical problems
Design sub-assemblies to meet broad design goals
Establish requirements and specifications as part of the design control process
Use empirical, numerical and experimental analysis to analyze designs
Identify and mitigate sub-assembly risks
Perform Tolerance Analyses of complex assemblies
Define test methods and conduct testing of complex mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies
Support our intellectual property portfolio through generation and support of novel ideas and concepts
Work with internal departments and external vendors to obtain prototype parts and to understand their capabilities and limitations
Support pre-clinical and clinical testing of devices
Conduct Design Reviews at various development stages
Gain a detailed understanding of the developing clinical environment (i.e. current treatment methods, evolving clinical needs etc.)
Gain a detailed understanding of the quality and regulatory requirements of Abbott, FDA and ISO regulations, manage project within these requirements
Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors
Perform other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned
Experience and Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering/related degree or equivalent experience
5+ years of engineering experience, primarily in Research & Development within the Medical Device industry
Experience designing and testing medical devices
Ability to act as a technical lead on projects from inception to commercialization
Familiarity with dimensioning and tolerancing standard ASME Y14.5M – 1994
Knowledge of medical device product development (ISO, GMP, FDA, CE) and design controls.
Experience with Solidworks and/or other CAD modeling software
Ability to travel up to 10%, including internationally when COVID19 restrictions are lifted
Preferred Qualifications / Education
Advanced degree in Engineering (Advanced degree may substitute for years of experience)
Affinity to learn and grow as they collaborate and support cross-functional team members from a wide range of Abbott departments in multiple geographic locations, as well as with suppliers and customers
Experience translating customer needs into requirements
Exposure to a variety of manufacturing processes and designing for manufacturability
Applied experience within at least one of the following areas preferred: FEA, CFD, simulation/analytics, motion control, data acquisition.
Knowledge of plastic injection molding and extrusions
Knowledge of material science and it’s applicability to the design process
Exposure to a range of engineering areas that include electrical, polymeric materials, biology
Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization
Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in timely manner.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
