Job Description
Purpose of Job:
1. To undertake Chemistry Research and Development projects for internal and external clients.
2. Developing proposals and undertake research work to efficiently and effectively deliver projects on time and within budget.

Job Duties:
1. Manage assigned research projects from start to finish ensuring project’s efficient completion.
2.Lead project teams in planning project activities, tasks and end results including work breakdown, estimates, responsibilities, schedules and budgets. Coordinate tasks and resource allocations for each project.
3. Coordinate and implement appropriate special projects within the business unit to explore new technologies and the possible development of new services and products.
4. Revise project plan as necessary and gain approval for changes in scope, budget or time prior to the execution of work.
5. Provide proper feedback and recognition of teamwork and team accomplishments on a regular basis.
6. Serve as the key contact with clients to provide or seek project-specific information to better understand client needs.
7. Set up, calibrate, and operate equipment in accordance with methods and SOPs.
8. Document all method development / method improvements in SOP format.
9. Provide training to staff for method transfers and use of complex analytical equipment.
10. Participate in special projects such as AOAC collaborative studies, etc.
11. Recommend ideas to develop or enhance analytical procedures to improve quality and/or efficiency of research processes.
12. Trouble shoot and maintenance of analytical equipment such as LC/MS/MS, GC/MS/MS, HPLC and GC.
13. Administer corporate human resource programs as they related to assigned personnel, including employee recruitment and retention, compensation, training and development, equal employment opportunity, performance management, and employment record documentation and conduct regular staff meetings.
14. Write proposals, reports, and manuscripts as they pertain to research projects.
15. Contribute to Silliker scientific leadership by periodically submitting publications or presentations relative to area of expertise.
16. Perform all duties in accordance with established safety procedures and quality assurance standards (global and local SOPs); ensures that other lab personnel comply with the same.
17. Personally develop and maintain expertise in food science and technology and related technologies through available scientific literature, contributions to scientific publications and presentations, and participation in associations, trade organizations, and the technical committees of these groups.
18. This position is required to have expertise in analytical chemistry research and development. To stay current with improved technologies to enable highly efficient and rugged methods.
19. This position has the responsibility and authority to identify departures from the quality system or test procedures and document such observations in accordance with prescribed complaint system.
20. Support corporate quality and improvement processes (TQM) and safety procedures.
21. Perform other duties as needed.

Knowledge & Skill
This position requires an advanced knowledge of analytical chemistry, preferably holding Ph.D. in Chemistry or another technical area or equivalent experience, to provide information to customers and employees as well as to implement new services. Knowledge of other technical disciplines statistics or product development techniques is desirable. A general knowledge of business, finance, budgeting and sales and marketing is necessary to have a better insight in how to gain new business and successfully maintain current customers. A general knowledge of personal computers is necessary to track laboratory information and produce documents to support the management function. A general knowledge on how to review analysis results and correct any discrepancies. Analytical skills are needed to problem solve and fulfill customer's analysis needs. Strong oral and written communication skills are required for effective customer and employee contact. Customer relation skills are needed to obtain and provide information to the customer. Strong management skills, obtained from previous supervisory experience, are necessary to insure that the department runs smoothly. Planning skills are essential to maintain efficient operations.

Job Complexity
This position requires individual analysis of each problem to determine the optimal solution. Problems can occur when the customer requests a research model not currently used in the laboratory or when a new project requires a modification of current methods. The incumbent uses previous experience, literature and contacts as resources to provide necessary information to solve a problem. Solutions may require innovative alternatives to modify current analysis methods to improve productivity or for solving unique employee relation difficulties. Customer problems are often unique and require the incumbent to select among several different alternatives to maintain customer business. The incumbent is responsible for financial and operational activities of the Research group. The incumbent must frequently prioritize the difficulties with little factual information to maintain profitability. This position frequently is a technical resource for others within Silliker and will be called upon to support their efforts.

Decision Making or Recommendations
This position requires decisions to be made regarding the research needs and difficulties encountered. Information is available from standard operating procedures, position precedents, federal and state regulations, written company procedures and policies, and previous projects. Some analysis actions are dictated by the customer's request and modifications are made according to the needs of the customer. Decisions can affect Chemistry Research operations as a whole or a particular individual, depending on the situation. Loss of revenue or efficiencies requires the incumbent to determine causes and the optimal course of action to correct the issue. Customers, operating conditions, expenses and laboratory personnel can all be affected by the decisions of the incumbent.

Accountability
The incumbent receives general direction from the Corporate Director Research and Development and other relevant staff of Corporate R&D or the Vice President Silliker Asia Pacific. This position works toward broad long-term objectives established with the Corporate Research & Development Department. Review of work occurs as needed to insure that procedures are followed and objectives and budgets are met. The incumbent is responsible for increasing service capabilities and enhancing production testing capabilities by process improvement. This position is responsible for maintaining a work environment that promotes a productive workforce and accurate results for the customer. Unique or unusual problems may result in consulting the manager or other corporate personnel to suggest possible solutions.

Supervision of Others
This position directly supervises projects, scientific staff, and technicians within Shanghai or Beijing sites specific to Chemistry Research. Supervisory responsibilities include hiring, training, promoting, disciplinary actions, assignment of work and evaluating work for accuracy and completeness.

Relationships
Coordination with other Silliker business units is frequently required to carry out projects. This position also works with Silliker corporate groups. Frequent contact with clients is necessary to provide and gather information. To promote Silliker research capabilities, the incumbent has to maintain active relationships with technical associations, and trade associations.
