WHAT YOU'LL DO

This is an exciting opportunity to join Abbott's fast growing Structural Heart business unit in Menlo Park, home of the life-saving MitraClip medical device. The R&D Engineer for Product Development is responsible for designing and developing implanted medical devices and delivery systems. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates medical device implants and delivery systems, specifically steerable catheter-based devices, and accessories.
  • Translate/anticipate un-met user needs to design, develop and verify new concepts from initial design to market release.
  • Partners with other design engineers to review and coordinate vendor activities to support development.
  • Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of development.
  • Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors.
  • Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting designs, methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE YOU'LL BRING:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field, preferably mechanical or biomedical engineering.
  • Advanced degree preferred. 
  • 2-4 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred:

  • CAD experience required (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Experience with development of medical devices, preferably catheter based in required
  • Familiar with common materials, processes and practices to produce catheter based medical devices.
  • Technical ability and passion for understanding complex mechanical designs, risk management and design controls
  • Experience with GD&T, stack-up analysis, and mechanical testing.
  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.
  • Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner.
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.
  • Will perform this job in a quality system environment.
  • Has broad knowledge of various technical alternatives and their potential impact on the business.
