Job Description:

The senior research engineer (SRE) is a key contributor to the Concept & Technology (C&T) team. The C&T team is a multi-disciplinary front-end innovation team comprised of mechanical, software, electrical and biomedical engineers that work closely with our MDS Strategic Innovation Group to identify and develop new opportunities for our MDS business.

Key to this role is having an entrepreneurial can-do mindset. The applicant should be very hands-on, comfortable in an electromechanical-biomedical prototyping lab, and passionate about developing innovative solutions that are aimed at improving clinical outcomes, patient experience and workflow for healthcare professionals. Applicant should have a positive attitude and ability to work in a team environment.

The SRE complements the team’s mechanical and electrical engineering talent with physiologic / biomedical depth of knowledge and capabilities.  Specifically, as we engage in new technical initiatives, the SRE provides the insights into fundamental physiologic signals or processes that involve our devices, and how they can be measured and/or influenced.  Further, the SRE works closely with the engineers on the team to determine whether it’s possible to make those measurements, and what technologies might be feasible within the objectives (such as cost) of a project.  Finally, the SRE is responsible for designing and executing in vitro and in vivo lab experiments to prove feasibility or iterate on a design concept.  Designing and building experimental setups, data acquisition systems, data analysis, and creating reports are expected.  The SRE will provide recommendations on external resources such as testing facilities, animal labs, clinical sites, form and manage relationships with them, and draft study protocols with input from other team members.

Responsibilities, skills, and behaviors that the senior research engineer should expect to experience in this role include:

  • An innate sense of curiosity that leads to the creation of new ideas, with the ability to drive work to a recommendation or conclusion
  • Comfort determining a “best path” in an environment with incomplete information
  • Familiar with sensors, transducers, physiologic modeling, and transfer functions
  • Systems and Signals, Functional Block Diagrams
  • Adept at statistical analysis, sensitivity, specificity, robustness in a noisy environment
  • Decision making and tools such as Pugh concept selection matrices, Fishbone Diagrams,
  • Gain understanding of customer needs through literature review, observing customer interviews, direct observation, competitive analysis, prototype evaluation, and clinical/simulated use studies.
  • Ideate new concepts and product solutions based on identified customer needs.
  • Translate these concept/solution ideas into testable hypotheses that address key technical risk factors.
  • Develop instrumentation and protocols to test such hypotheses.
  • Desire to build proof-of-principle prototypes by “getting your hands dirty" and using basic machining equipment, hand-held tools, and creative unconventional techniques.
  • Demonstrated creation of new concepts and/or Intellectual Property (IP) as well as understanding of Intellectual Property with elements of offensive and defensive design.
  • Knowledge of how to apply design analysis and optimization techniques such as:
    • First Principles Modeling
    • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
    • Experimental Testing & Design of Experiments (DOEs)
  • Desire to work closely with electrical engineers and mechanical engineers to create innovative electro-mechanical concepts.
  • Ability to generate protocols, reports, and presentations to share information with team members and independent reviewers as part of Technical Reviews and Constructive Challenge.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to multi-task and drive to achieve results with minimal oversight.

Qualifications:

Minimal

  • BS in Engineering discipline
  • Proven track-record of developing novel ideas that resulted in peer-reviewed publications or led to funded project/product development
  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience in a research engineer/scientist role or a PhD in an engineering discipline

Desired

  • MS or PhD in an engineering discipline (Biomedical engineers must have significant depth in traditional engineering area such as EE or MechE)
  • Ability to deal with a high level of ambiguity
  • Experience with electro-mechanical devices
  • Effective interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and influence multiple levels of associates.
  • Experience interfacing with other engineering disciplines, specifically Electrical Engineering and embedded software.
  • Expertise in generating product requirements, specifications, test protocols, and test reports.
  • Experience contracting with, and managing, third party consultants within and outside the US.
  • Experience in the medical industry and associated design control development methods
