Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D)

PT&D is the bridge that turns forward-thinking science into medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain from early development activities to established commercial brands. PT&D designs and develops the active ingredients, the formulations, the processes and the devices that make up our Drug Products.

To meet patient’s needs AZ has recognised the opportunity to apply a diverse range of new modality technologies to support identification of novel therapeutics.

To support the development of the pipeline, PT&D has established a New Modalities and Parenteral Development group. This group has accountability for developing the pipeline of both new modality projects and traditional synthetic molecules requiring parenteral delivery.

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Scientist – Data Science. This role focuses on the application of data science to the diverse NMPD drug portfolio.

The individual will provide technical leadership in utilising digital and technical innovations to translate data into knowledge, and to exploit opportunities to accelerate development timelines.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver digital innovations to meet challenges of scientific analysis and data processing, and contribute to developing global ways of working.

  • Frequently interact with customers to adapt approach to new insights based on findings in the data.

  • Reduce time taken to do laborious and subjective manual data processing steps.

  • Conduct hands-on data mining projects, based on specific data sets and problems.

  • Develop & pilot tools, algorithms & methods in collaboration with other groups

  • Clearly and objectively communicate results as well as their associated uncertainties & limitations.

  • Investigate the feasibility of, and deliver data science solutions and ideas that drive value to AstraZeneca.

  • Apply a range of data science methodologies, developing novel data science solutions where off-the-shelf methodologies do not fit.

  • Implement and maintain tools and algorithms in a manner which meets regulatory and evidential requirements.

Desirable skills & capabilities

  • BSc, MSc or PhD statistics, mathematics, informatics, computer science, the physical sciences or related subject, or equivalent in experience

  • An appreciation of drug development and how data, information and knowledge are central to risk management and decision making

  • Working experience in the Pharmaceutical/Biopharmaceutical/Food/Cosmetics/Fast Moving Consumer Goods Industry

  • Experience and proven track record in application of data science in an industrial context

  • Experience in data mining, machine learning, statistics and data visualisation

  • Ability to extract, manipulate and visualise data to answer complex technical and scientific questions and drive strategic value

  • Understanding of algorithm design, development, optimisation, scaling and application

  • Computing skills: scientific computing and scripting (e.g. R, Python, Pandas & Jupyter)

  • Clear and objective communicate skills in conveying results as well as their associated uncertainties & limitations

  • Customer focus - dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers
