Job Description

Bayer is currently building an integrative research institute and oncogenic signaling laboratory in Kendall Square on Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) campus. The lab will be housed temporarily at Tufts Biolabs Launchpad until building construction is completed in late 2021. Researchers will support the existing oncogenic signaling pipeline, including late stage assets, to achieve milestones and increase disease understanding and drive therapeutic development. The lab will also expand collaborative efforts in the Boston/Cambridge area to confirm findings and build potential licensing opportunities.

 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Senior Scientist II- Oncology, are to: 

 

  • Demonstrate an in-depth broad scientific and operational knowledge for one functional development area and applies this to the process development process;
  • Independently design and conduct process development experiments, assays, or procedures of considerable complexity with considerable discretion as to work details requiring complicated scientific analysis, operational planning and execution;
  • Contribute to scientific literature and conferences and is highly respected by peers and company for their scientific knowledge;
  • Analyze and interpret results, systems or procedures; troubleshoots failed experiments, assays or procedures and makes changes as appropriate;
  • Plan and assign tasks to a team of scientists and ensures through supervision that junior members of the scientific staff contribute to the overall success of projects;
  • Develop creative, novel programs which can open up new business opportunities for the company;
  • Identify "leading edge" technology at a time early enough to allow the company to obtain a proprietary position or substantial lead time on the competition;
  • Act independently, develop and propose experimental program to solve identified project issues;
  • Contribute to the success of research initiatives applying a wide variety of scientific concepts and technologies to the development of new products impacting the portfolio;
  • Propose programs to achieve IP-position relevant for future R&D;
  • Leverage scientific expertise by consulting with various research teams to generate new ideas and solve difficult problems;
  • Identify scientific gaps, issues and opportunities of current project work;
  • Continually sustain a record of technical proficiency, innovation, successful collaboration with others, excellent technical judgment and independent thought;
  • Make significant contributions to scientific journals and conferences;
  • Identify and propose external scientific advances and novel technologies with potential impact to Oncology portfolio;
  • Establish a network with internal and external experts in field of expertise;
  • Ensure that laboratory notebooks are consistently updated, audited, and well maintained;
  • Be an ambassador for the Bayer brand, supporting Bayer's perception as a "partner of Choice”;
  • Interpret and effectively communicate complex scientific findings in one-on-one discussions and department and functional and global meetings;
  • Support Pre-Clinical Research will advance research in an assigned disease state and the identification of new therapeutic targets;
  • Develop and nurtures relationships with key oncology stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Ph.D. with at least 12 years of relevant Oncology experience, basic science cancer biology or within pharma biotech oncology drug discovery;
  • Drug development expertise, including demonstrated ability to manage projects and work in a multidisciplinary context and to develop and work in a partnership with external scientists (academic and industry);
  • Experience as part of a project team and demonstrated success with significant contributions to major milestones of project either by applying a broad range of scientific/technical principles;
  • Experience supervising employees in a scientific setting;
  • Has Significantly contributed to the development of novel project proposals or technologies;
  • Has contributed to patent applications or proprietary technologies, when possible;
  • Demonstrated ability to design, execute, analyze and interpret experiments, systems, methods development, validation, scale-up or operations which leads to significant impact on a project or the strategic direction of the department;
  • Demonstrated scientific/technical leadership abilities through major contributions to new or advanced technologies and/or new concept research areas;
  • Demonstrated success for technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought;
  • Demonstrated ability to present ongoing scientific/technical work at internal/departmental seminars;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the development and protection of proprietary technology;
  • Ability to build relationships through inter-organization collaborations;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including writing of scientific and technical reports and presentations;
  • Leadership of cross functional teams from early drug discovery to lead candidate development stage;
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft suite of Software (Word, Excel).
