Job Description

The Translational Pathology team works within translational medicine to leverage actionable insights through the investigation of molecular and histological features of patient tissues. We are recruiting for a lab-level scientist to join the growing multiplex immunofluorescence laboratory in either Gaithersburg US or Cambridge UK to develop new multiplex IF panels for immune profiling, discovery, and description of determinants of response and resistance to immune therapies.

What you’ll do (site location Gaithersburg US or Cambridge UK)

  • Develop, validate, and deploy multiplex immunofluorescence panels for human clinical trial samples.

  • Work across oncology translational medicine (TM) in a dynamic matrix environment to identify and address most impactful challenges to facilitate safe, rapid, and effective understanding of molecular mechanisms in oncology.

  • Discover, test, and improve commercial and noncommercial multiplex IF staining and imaging platforms

  • Drive the development of novel image analysis solutions.

  • Work closely in collaboration with machine learning engineers inside AZ to develop new methods of data analysis suitable for the multi-parametric datasets in multiplex IF.

  • Apply data and knowledge analytics to deliver actionable insight driving discovery and development of the next generation of cancer medicines.

  • Discover, design and code innovative ways to identify and visualize meaningful patterns in complex data.

  • Work with our labs to influence generation of data assets.

  • Collaborate with industry and academia.

  • Publish your work in high impact journals.

Essential for the role

  • Relevant PhD (or equivalent graduate degree plus proven applied experience), combining:

  • Technical experience in the design, development, and validation of multiplex IF panels (4+ markers, any method)

  • Multiplex immunofluorescence imaging experience.

  • Image analysis experience.

  • Technical expertise in pathology, histology, immunohistochemistry, image analysis, biostatistics, mathematical modelling, and data science.

  • A deep understanding of the molecular mechanisms driving cancer or immunological disorders.

  • Innate drive to identify, understand, and resolve impediments to achieving goals.

  • Skilled in effective communication of complex data to a non-expert.

  • Data management including curation, data engineering, FAIR and reproducible research practices.

  • Capability of successfully managing multiple simultaneous projects.

  • Working effectively within cross-disciplinary science teams, including with functional leaders.

  • Experience contributing to the research community through publications and presentations

  • R and/or Python programming and visualization expertise desired.
