Software Development Engineer (Back End)
Primary Purpose
Reporting to a Software Development Lead, the Software Development Engineer (Back End) serves as an integral part of the software development team and converts requirements and user stories into design specifications and working code.
The role is responsible for the development of tools and applications for RWS Life Sciences and works on the design and development of the source code used to produce these applications. The Back End Software Development Engineer is focused on server-side business logic along with building APIs for the retrieval and manipulation of database records.
The Software Development Engineer reviews functional specifications and converts them into code that achieves the functional objectives. The position also fixes system bugs, improves application performance, and collaborates with the rest of the Development team.
Essential Functions
• Responsible for the management of data delivery, communication with the server and maintenance of the database.
• Defines site objectives by analyzing user requirements; envisioning system features and functionality.
• Writes well-documented, extensible software code that is easy to maintain, and that adheres to generally accepted programming standards and OOP practices.
• Designs and implements updates to the database schema.
• Integrates third party software through API connections
• Completes functional objectives based on weekly SCRUM planning and maintains project timelines

Qualification Profile
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skills and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
• Experience working in PHP and MySQL
• Demonstrated experience effectively utilizing OOP concepts and Design Patterns.
• Comfortable with basic Linux command line operation
• Proficient with basic front-end technologies (JavaScript, CSS, HTML)
• Demonstrated success working in an Agile/Scrum environment.
• Team experience with version control (Git)
• Familiar with web tools and frameworks in use (Composer, Symfony, Laravel, Jquery, Sass, AngularJS, Docker).
• Familiar with ticket tracking products such as Jira and documentation tools such as Confluence.
• Bachelor’s degree or demonstrated equivalent experience in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
