Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS), BD’s largest Business Unit with $3.8B in annual revenue, is comprised of the world leading products needed to safely prepare and administer medication, such as: intravenous catheters, IV sets, connectors, flush syringes, Chloraprep infection prevention products, hazardous drug safety containment items, and hypodermic syringes. MDS is focused on reducing complications, improving patient safety/outcomes, and lowering total cost of care around the world.

Job Description:

The Lead Technician (LT) is a member of the Concept & Technology (C&T) team. The C&T team is a multi-disciplinary front-end innovation team comprised of mechanical, electrical, biomedical engineers and industrial designers that works closely with our MDS Strategic Innovation Group to identify and develop new opportunities for our MDS business.

The LT works closely with C&T engineers in translating ideas to concrete physical prototypes that demonstrate proof-of-concept. Key to this role is having significant depth and experience as a technician and an entrepreneurial can-do mindset. The applicant should be very hands-on and be passionate about developing innovative solutions that are aimed at improving clinical outcomes, patient experience and workflow for healthcare professionals. Applicant should thrive in a team environment, but also have self-initiative to execute tasks independently. Experience with sensors (pressure/piezo/temperature) is a significant plus.

Responsibilities, skills, and behaviors that an LT should expect to experience in this role include:

  • Leading proof-of-principle prototype fabrication by “getting your hands dirty" and using basic machining equipment, hand-held tools, 3d-printing, ultrasonic welding, microscopes, general laboratory equipment, stamping, molding and creative unconventional techniques as required.
  • Understanding of wide range of manufacturing methods and design for manufacturability
  • Challenging other team-members to ensure designs and test-setups are manufacturable
  • Defining timeline for independent task assignment, organize the priority of work and required resources with strong accountability for successful completion of agreed upon deliverables.
  • Supporting design for molding, assembly, and scalability for high volume production.
  • Generating prototype test protocols, reports, and presentations to share information with team members.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to multi-task and drive to achieve results with minimal oversight.
  • Demonstrated expertise in CAD modeling (preferably SolidWorks) to support C&T engineers with creating technical drawings is a plus.

Qualifications:

Minimal

  • Associates degree and minimum of 8 years of experience in early stage prototype part fabrication and assembly using 3D-printing, machining, molding, metal stamping, gluing, soldering and ultrasonic welding techniques  
  • Experience with electromechanical device assembly, including soldering, gluing of sensors (Piezo/Strain-gauge/temperature).
  • Experience in writing and executing test protocols
  • Experience managing suppliers and procure mechanical and electrical components based on project requirements

Desired

  • Experience using lab test equipment including DVM, oscilloscope, analyzer, function generator etc.
  • Well-versed in CAD Modeling (Solidworks or similar). CAM programming experience a plus.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose electrical/mechanical problems
  • Experience programing and using Tensile/Compression equipment such as Instron
  • Experience operating laser cutting machines
  • Experience with high resolution part finishing and painting for appearance model prototyping
  • Able to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read and understand electrical/electronic drawing and schematic diagrams.
  • Ability to deal with a high level of ambiguity
