Software Engineer

The Research and Automation Technologies team is seeking to fill a Software Engineer position at its Thousand Oaks or South San Francisco facility. Primary responsibilities include management and automation of R&AT software development efforts, including source code repository and automated build system management, AWS infrastructure management, device driver development, and data integration for the benefit of Research automation projects. Software development activities will include code to control lab automation and instrumentation (both 3rd party and internally developed), and code to extract, transform, and load data between lab instrumentation and Amgen’s lab informatics management systems and analysis tools. This is an exciting, fast-paced role where every project is unique, requiring constant innovation.

  • Management of source code repository (GitLab on AWS) and automated build system (Team City on AWS) management.
  • Management of AWS infrastructure: patching as required by our Global Infrastructure Services and Global Information Protection organizations.
  • Development of code to control the operation of lab automation and instruments. This code will then be consumed by additional custom-developed code to integrate and orchestrate the operation of multiple instruments, or wrapped so that it can be consumed by 3rd party integration software such as Cellario or Overlord.
  • Development of instrument microcontroller firmware to reside on instruments and expose an interface to enable external PC control.
  • Design and development of database schemas and solutions.
  • Work closely with our scientists to elucidate requirements, design a solution, and rapidly iterate on development and test cycles until the solution is accepted and productive.
  • Develop desktop and web applications with simple, elegant user interfaces that enable our scientists to perform their informatic tasks faster and more accurately.
  • Monitoring technological developments in the field & evaluation of new technologies.

Basic Qualifications

Master's Degree

OR

Bachelor's Degree and 2-3 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's in computer science, or a relevant field
  • Experience using Microsoft Visual Studio, C#, WPF, and the .NET framework to develop desktop and web applications.
  • Experience with SQL Server and Oracle databases, developing and optimizing queries, stored procedures, etc.
  • Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated successful interpersonal relationships with peers and colleagues in other scientific teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in teams to scale a process from a manual proof-of-concept to a fully-automated, high-capacity, high-throughput unattended operation.
  • High level of self-motivation
