The Cardiometabolic Department at Amgen in South San Francisco is seeking a highly motivated Senior Associate Scientist to be part of a fast-paced, integrated and interactive research group developing therapeutics to treat metabolic diseases. The successful candidate must have strong in vivo pharmacology skills to lead and support rodent studies and be able to independently design, perform and analyze cell-based assays and ex vivo tissue analysis.

In this vital role you will join a multidisciplinary, cross-functional team, collaborate with research scientists with diverse expertise and contribute to multiple projects at both early and later stages of the Discovery pipeline. Position Responsibilities

  • Contribute, both independently and as part of a team, to in-life portions of in vivo studies, including detailed note taking during all stages of a study, performing all necessary techniques with precision (collect baseline measures, randomization, dosing, sample collection, necropsy), monitoring animal health and welfare, prepare for harvests, and support ex vivo tissue and serum analysis
  • Design, perform, optimize and analyze cell assays and ex vivo tissue analysis
  • Analyze and interpret data, communicate with manager and colleagues in written and oral formats, share results at team meetings
  • Be accountable for accurate, organized and timely record keeping
  • Show good scientific judgment at the experiment and project level
  • Demonstrate commitment to compliance and lab safety
  • Enjoy working in teams and be comfortable working independently with minimal daily oversight

Basic Qualifications

Master’s degree and 3 years of scientific experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry background, familiarity with screening workflow processes
  • Highly self-motivated, proactive, able to prioritize tasks and maintain focus in a fast paced research environment
  • Adaptability/flexibility to effectively work independently and as part of an engaged and productive team to deliver results and advance programs
  • Will embrace supporting both high-throughput routine screening tasks and digging deep into biology questions
  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to animal welfare and compliance including having a thorough knowledge of the regulations for an in vivo facility and remain aligned with IACUC regulations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Extensive experience performing in-life research studies in rodents; experience in one or more of the following disease areas a plus: NAFLD, obesity, diabetes, inflammation, in vivo bioluminescence imaging
  • Proficient in basic bio-methodology techniques, anesthesia and physiological monitoring, compound dosing, and sample collection. Familiarity with in vivo bioluminescence imaging a plus.
  • Experience designing and performing both low-throughput and high-throughput cell line- and primary cell-based experiments, analyze and interpret results; develop stable expression cell lines, CRISPR Cas9 KI cell lines, etc.
  • Expertise in the following: RNA and Protein isolation, qPCR, WB, ELISA, colorimetric assays, both biochemical and immunofluorescence-based cell analysis
  • Skilled in computerized data acquisition, post-acquisition processing and data analysis using analytical & graphic software, and data summarization
  • Desire to learn new skills, take on new ideas, branch out into new territory, develop new models, and collaborate with researchers all over the Research organization.
