Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. Amgen’s Therapeutic Discovery organization is seeking a motivated and collaborative protein expression and cell culture expert to join the Protein Technologies group at our Amgen South San Francisco site. Protein Technologies group is responsible for designing and producing key enabling recombinant proteins and cell lines to support early discovery programs and exploring ground breaking novel protein modalities. Technical expertise in transient and stable protein expression platforms is required for this laboratory-based position.

Responsibilities include:

• Expressing recombinant constructs using mammalian cell hosts after carefully designing your experiments and workflow
• Characterize transfected cells by IF microscopy or flow cytometry
• Conduct expression optimization and troubleshooting, performing small (~1-L) to mid-scale (~30-L) protein production runs using various platforms
• Analyze harvested culture media and/or cell lysates by SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, and Octet to determine secretory titer and protein quality
• Summarize and report experimental results
• Align with data entry and record keeping requirements
• Contribute to technology development initiatives through your technical expertise.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or a related subject area and 5 years of scientific laboratory experience. OR
• Master’s Degree in a related subject area and 3 years of laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Extensive prior experience in recombinant protein production using mammalian expression systems in biotech/pharma industry settings.
• Familiarity with secreted protein and membrane-anchored protein expression and characterization.
• Good understanding of intracellular protein folding, assembly, trafficking, and secretion mechanisms.
• A demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
• Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.

Solid hands-on experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Cell line and cell phenotype engineering using HEK293 and CHO cells.
• Producing complex secretory molecules such as bi-specific and multi-specific antibodies.
• Robotic liquid handling (e.g. TECAN) and high-throughput protein expression platform.
• Operating and maintaining bioreactors at 5L‒10L scale using disposable vessels.
• Performing cell growth using a Wave cell culture platform.
