In the Companion Diagnostics Business (CDx), our team partners very closely with leading pharmaceutical companies to develop, manufacture and commercialize highly regulated medical devices which are critical for physicians to help select therapies for their patients.

In this exciting and challenging role, you will report to the Vice President and General Manager of the CDx division of Agilent, and be a member of the CDx Leadership Team, participating in setting strategy and business objectives. Working with Business Development, you will also play a key role in growing the CDx business with new pharma collaborations and partnerships, and provide a strategic focus on collaborative developments, customer expectations, timelines and budget. You will collaborate with the Chief Scientific Officer and the Chief Pathologist of the CDx business, to integrate science, technology and clinical applications in R&D, focusing on meeting business and corporate objectives important to the field of Precision Medicine and the Companion Diagnostics business unit. You will participate with the VP/GM of CDx in formulating current and long-range plans, objectives and policies in line with the CDx business and Agilent Corporate Objectives. The Sr Director of R&D, CDx is results-driven with a strong strategic vision and the ability to build consensus with Senior Leaders across the organization.

Your R&D team will consist of approximately 100 staff, with multi-disciplinary responsibilities, including Directors, Scientific Managers, Supervisors, Scientists and Research Associates, and growing in size as the business continues to scale. As the head of R&D, you will provide leadership, strategic and technical direction to the R&D staff, ensuring organizational excellence, resourced appropriately with key competencies in place, and recruiting and managing top talent.

Responsibilities include:

  • In conjunction with the CDx Leadership team, is a key contributor to establishing CDx business objectives and securing new pharma collaborations and partnerships.
  • Identifies, implements and communicates the strategic and technical direction for the CDx business from the R&D perspective.
  • Represents the R&D function at the highest level to pharmaceutical partners to make decisions and set strategies for achieving business and project goals.
  • Identifies, recruits and retains talent to ensure R&D is resourced appropriately to meet project goals and meet growth projections.
    • Works closely with cross-functional directors and managers within the CDx function, and at the corporate level (including manufacturing, clinical affairs, quality assurance, marketing) to identify issues that may impact project milestones or business operations, and recommends appropriate action to be taken.
    • Initiates and supports process improvements and drives quality initiatives. Provides leadership in a fashion that supports Agilent's culture, mission and values
    • Visible and participatory role in pharma/Agilent Master Collaboration Committees
    • Ensure timely and strategic decision making in projects
    • Consult with teams and managers in Risk Management
    • Demonstrate good understanding of business processes
    • Participate in meetings internal and external to Agilent that enables growth of the CDx business and that meets Agilent's business and financial objectives
    • Ensure execution and continual development of processes that drive alignment of Agilent processes and approaches
    • Displays strong interest and drive to become a subject matter expert in the role of Companion Diagnostics in Precision Medicine
  • Interact effectively with senior management across Agilent, and in particular, with senior managers within the Diagnostics and Genomics Group (DGG).
  • Participates in budget preparation
