- Design solutions to establish new and improving existing material flows throughout the factory. The design includes material arrival at docks, delivery to line-side locations, material transport between internal manufacturing lines such as body-in-white, paint, powertrain and general assembly.
- Develop material handling solutions that are simple robust and provide maximum value to Tesla
- Targeted goals include:
- Increased reliability
- Reduction in material handling waste (reduced touches)
- Improvement in labor efficiency
- Optimized space utilization
- Highly accurate part selection
- Concept development, detailed engineering design, and collaboration with 3rd parties on system build, integration, and testing.
- Develop analytical models to establish design criteria and overall system performance criteria
- Responsible for specifying equipment in form of project specifications and requirements
- Leveraging outside partners for solution development and design
- Support the overall layout and system design process including the modeling and simulation of individual technologies and entire systems
- Technical project management and implementation
- Manage budget, timeline and scope
- Support trouble-shooting during installation and start-up
- Smooth handoff to operations at Tesla factory locations
- Able to create designs that transition from engineering to fabrication to installation.
- Effectively communicates and collaborates openly with vendors, internal management and other mechanical and control engineers on the Material Flow Engineering team.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
- 3-6+ years of practical material handling and process equipment design experience within the manufacturing and material handling environment
- A passion to work on mechanical automation equipment, robots, design of electromechanical systems, PLCs, motion controls and navigation Systems.
- Ability to see a project from concept to manufacturing while working in a close-knit, team environment.
- Must understand the integration of equipment design into existing or new systems.
- Must possess knowledge of moving mechanism and machine design, component part design, and machined part processes.

- Knowledge of and experience with material flow strategies and dynamic manufacturing systems.

Position Title: Sr. Material Flow Project Engineer
The Role:
Project engineers on the Material Flow Engineering team are responsible for the efficient and reliable flow of material to the Tesla manufacturing lines. As a senior project engineer you are responsible for managing technical projects from “cradle to grave”. This includes the design, implementation and continuous improvement of automated material handling equipment such as automated storage systems, final assemble conveyance such as car bodies, batteries, and drive units etc. Besides owning the design and technical scope of a project, senior engineers also provide leadership and guidance to other engineers and stakeholders within Tesla. A senior engineers role is to make sure that MFE system’s designs meet Tesla’s goals and objectives. Traditional project management functions such as timelines, budgets and coordination’s with vendors and other groups within Tesla are also the responsibility of the senior project engineer on the material flow team.
