Senior R&D Engineer, Mechanical – Heart Failure Burlington, MA or Pleasanton, CA

The Heart Failure product platforms include HeartMate™, CentriMag™, and CardioMEMS™.
As a Senior R&D Engineer, you will be a part of the Heart Failure product development team focused on new product development and sustaining product support of innovative mechanical and electromechanical medical devices and subsystems/components. This role will involve a range of responsibilities which may include product design, prototyping, feasibility testing, translating user needs to verifiable design requirements, performing risk assessments, V&V testing, data analysis, and test method development and validation. You will work in compliance to Abbott’s Quality System and procedures, and in accordance with regulatory standards for medical devices.
As a senior member of the team, you may be taking on technical leadership roles (including the breakdown and delegation of work to other team members), mentorship of junior engineers, and collaborate/coordinate cross-functionally (e.g. Quality, Manufacturing, Marketing, Regulatory, Supply Chain, etc.) in achieving business and product development goals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Utilize multidisciplinary engineering knowledge and experience to design and develop new Class II and Class III medical devices
- Utilize structured problem-solving approaches to resolve design investigations during new product development and sustaining support for on-market products (e.g. CAPAs)
- Plan and execute feasibility testing and design of experiments (DoEs) utilizing various analytical design tools
- Support the creation of user needs and establish design input requirements
- Design and validate test fixtures/equipment and methods
- Create schedules/work breakdown structures for yourself and for junior team members
- Communicate effectively with management and cross-functional team members
- Collaborate with and direct the work of consultants and suppliers
- Ensure compliance with quality and regulatory requirements of Abbott, FDA, and other regulatory bodies
Experience and Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, or Materials Science Engineering
- 5+ years of engineering experience in R&D
- Design and testing Class II and Class III implanted medical devices
- Solidworks and/or other CAD modeling software
- Product risks assessments, including DFMEAs
- Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels within the organization
- Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment with evolving business priorities
Preferred Qualifications / Education
- Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes: injection molding, machining, and design for manufacturability
- Technical expertise in the following areas: plastic injection molding, sheet metal forming, laser/hermetic welding, electronic enclosures and assemblies, RF energy transfer, heat transfer, corrosion/corrosion resistance, high-cycle fatigue testing, failure root cause analysis, tolerance analysis of complex assemblies
- Project leadership, either within R&D or cross-functionally
