Summary


The Sr. Principal Mechanical Design Engineer reports to the Director of Engineering-R&D Acute Therapies, and is the Team Leader of a group of 5-10 Mechanical Engineers. This position is responsible for creating and maintaining design documentation and for providing hands-on assistance to the engineering staff in numerous aspects of medical device new product development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design new parts and assemblies using CAD, Generate CAD models, assemblies, and drawings from engineering requirements using good drafting practices.
  • Document engineering concepts.
  • Prepare clear, complete, and accurate detailed drawings for engineering and manufacturing purposes, including dimensioned layouts with special fits and tolerances.
  • Creates models and manufacturing drawings from engineering specifications or sketches.
  • Modify existing mechanical and schematic drawings and models per engineering change orders, generate bills of materials, perform dimensional checks for form and fit, and maintain design documentation per company procedures, tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Design and build basic tooling, test fixtures and assembly equipment Build prototypes and models and may operate machine tools Supporting design activities, identify, investigate, and solve engineering problems.
  • Interact with vendors to obtain equipment, components, supplies or services.
  • Adhere to design control procedures, general safety rules, company policies and procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices, and FDA regulations.
  • Ensures consistency and quality of group output.
  • Assigns work in coordination with head of Engineering.
  • Coordinates daily activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) required.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years’ prior experience as an ME using SolidWorks.
  • Experience designing and detailing injection molded and machined parts
  • Comfortable working with multidisciplinary projects that require mechanical design, computer aided design and drafting, plastics design/assembly, and electro-mechanical engineering.
  • Experience designing and detailing mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Experience in medical or other regulated industries.
  • Proven leadership skills coordinating a team.
  • Experience designing electro-mechanical assemblies, die cast parts, and sheet metal parts.
  • Experience with CAD surfacing design and modification.
  • Machine shop experience.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM enterprise, expert knowledge of SolidWorks 3D design software.
  • ProE experience.
  • Experience electronics packaging/enclosure design.
  • Ability to work with complex parts and assemblies.
  • Ability to follow ANSI Y145 drawing practices.
  • Strong understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Ability to perform stack-up tolerance study.
  • Ability to make sound design and drafting decisions.
  • Able to objectively identify technical problems and create solutions.
  • Ability to work with both internal and external (vendor) resources.
  • Ability to take instruction and work with engineers and technicians.
  • Able to locate and order parts / supplies.
  • Knoledge of MDD, ISO13485:2003
  • Capable of performing assembling of prototype equipment, test fixtures
